Halo What Day The 20th Anniversary Actually Is

The 20th anniversary of the Halo franchise will happen in a few weeks, and the occasion will be celebrated with the launch of the highly-anticipated next entry in the series, as Halo Infinite is set to release on December 8. The launch of Halo Infinite is an apt way to celebrate the Halo franchise’s anniversary, but Microsoft could have more up its sleeve, especially when it comes to the larger Halo franchise as a whole.

The original Halo: Combat Evolved is considered to be one of the most important console launch games of all time, up there with the likes of Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Halo: Combat Evolved helped popularize online gaming on consoles, especially for the first-person shooter genre, which was something that was once considered the domain of PC gaming. The single-player campaigns across the Halo franchise are some of the best in the genre, with fans spending decades blasting through armies of foes from behind Master Chief’s visor.

Halo is easily the most iconic Xbox Game Studios brand, with Master Chief being the console line’s equivalent to Mario. It’s likely that the Halo franchise will continue to receive new entries, for as long as there are Xbox systems being produced. The 20th anniversary of the Halo franchise will take place on November 15, 2021. This also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Xbox line itself. It’s clear how Microsoft plans to celebrate the occasion (at least, in part), thanks to a high-profile delay that happened in 2020.

How Microsoft Could Celebrate Halo’s 20th Anniversary

In 2020, Halo Infinite was delayed, pushing it out of the launch window of the Xbox Series X/S. This was seen as a huge blow for Microsoft’s new system, as it was launching without any exclusives, unlike the PS5, which had games like Demon’s Souls. In 2021, the situation has been reversed: The Xbox line will have two big console exclusives going into the holiday season, in the form of Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite, while the PS5 has no exclusives, due to Horizon Forbidden West being pushed to 2022. As such, Microsoft is going to promote Halo Infinite as its big game of the year, while tying it to the 20th-anniversary celebrations of the series.

Outside of Halo Infinite, it’s unclear how Microsoft will celebrate the anniversary of the series, seeing as all of the existing entries are available on Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft has released some special Halo artwork for the 20th anniversary, but there could be more announcements soon. One possible answer is the upcoming Halo TV series, which is set to launch on Paramount+ in early 2022. The 20th anniversary of Halo would be the perfect time to debut the first trailer for the Halo TV show, ahead of its release next year.
