Warning! Spoilers for Star Wars: Life Day #1

Continuing the infamous legacy of the Star Wars Holiday Special, Han Solo and Chewbacca are heading home to celebrate Life Day in a new comic.

In recent years, the Star Wars franchise has poked fun at itself, most notably through meta humor and Lego parodies. Once a meme among the fanbase, audiences have turned the laughably bad Star Wars Holiday Special into its own phenomenon. Now, the galaxy’s stand-in holiday called Life Day is making a resurgence in the upcoming one-shot, Star Wars: Life Day #1, written by Cavan Scott, Justina Ireland, Jody Houser, and Steve Orlando. The issue includes art by Ivan Fiorelli, Georges Jeanty, Kei Zama, and Paul Fry, with a cover by Phil Noto.

A preview for Star Wars: Life Day #1 has revealed that Han Solo and Chewbacca will endure an unexpected adventure taking place on the holiday. The one-shot is set to include several stories that will take readers throughout the galaxy, jumping around in time. Han and Leia will find themselves together on Life Day, with Chewbacca on Kashyyyk. Meanwhile, the Wookie Jedi Padawan, Burryaga from The High Republic era will have a story of his own. Since Life Day is native to the Wookie home planet of Kashyyyk, he is a natural inclusion.

  • THE GALAXY’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY!
  • Happy LIFE DAY! Celebrate the galaxy’s favorite holiday with a collection of festive tales from all across the STAR WARS SAGA! Life Day is the last thing on HAN SOLO’S mind when he and CHEWBACCA find themselves outgunned and under fire. But Chewie won’t give up hope, remembering the lessons of Life Days past and present. As for Life Days yet to come… well, they’ll have to survive the night first!

Last year, The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special similarly homaged the original special with a tongue in cheek story. Similarly, the one-shot appears to be intended for all ages, with a premise that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Although the issue is being published by Marvel and not IDW, which is known for child friendly Star Wars comics, there is a sense of lightheartedness to the preview. As Chewie goes off on his separate way, Han walks around vendors and has a glimpse at what seems to be either his future or his past in a crystal ball offered by an Ewok. The few who watched the original Holiday Special all the way through might recall the crystal ball as an important part of Life Day festivities.

The revived holiday that was once shunned in the Star Wars expanded universe isn’t so unrealistic in the grand scheme of things. As it makes its next appearance, Life Day accompanies a story that promises to be more substantial than any low budget TV Christmas production. It might only be a matter of time before Life Day is appropriated into live action again, somewhere in the wide spectrum of upcoming Disney+ Star Wars series. Star Wars: Life Day #1 releases on November 24.
