After a few years away from the franchise (during which time he was believed to be dead), Han returned to Fast and Furious in F9: The Fast Saga, setting up some interesting possibilities for Fast and Furious 10 and beyond. The fan-favorite character plays a major role in the series’ latest entry, bringing with him a new member of the family in Anna Sawai’s Elle. Han still has some unfinished business by the end of F9, however, as evidenced by his confrontation with Deckard Shaw in the film’s post-credits scene.
Ever since his franchise debut in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, fans knew exactly when and where Han would meet his death. The following three films all took place prior to the events of Tokyo Drift, allowing Han to continue starring alongside Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, and the rest of the crew, but his grim fate always loomed in the background. That fate became even more complicated when Furious 7 retconned Han’s death, revealing that Shaw was actually the one responsible. The subsequent admittance of Shaw into the Fast family in The Fate of the Furious angered a large subset of fans, leading to the #JusticeForHan movement online and the eventual revival of the character in F9.
Now that Han has been restored to his proper place in the Fast and Furious franchise, what will the future hold for him? There are a number of exciting options, and given the character’s immense popularity, they could all become reality over the next few years. For starters, it seems like a given that Han will feature in Fast and Furious 10 and Fast and Furious 11. After the massive backlash to his temporary expulsion from the story, it would be a huge mistake not to include him in the saga’s big finale.
Beyond the upcoming Fast and Furious core films, there are two potential spinoffs that could feature Han in prominent roles. The first, which seems to be set up pretty clearly at the end of F9, is a starring role in Hobbs & Shaw 2, or whatever the follow-up to Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson’s side film ends up being called. Han would bring some fun new energy to a Hobbs & Shaw sequel, providing new character dynamics and a strong emotional core to the story that the original spinoff lacked. Han and Shaw still have a score to settle, after all, and it would be great if they got a whole film in which to do so.
The other potential Han spinoff is a direct successor to Tokyo Drift, which itself is more of a side story than a core part of the Fast saga. F9 brings back original Tokyo Drift characters Sean, Twinkie, and Earl, while also introducing Elle as Han’s adopted daughter. That’s a strong ensemble, and because Tokyo Drift has retained a dedicated fan base all its own, it could make a lot of sese for Universal to produce a Tokyo Drift 2. In short, there’s a lot of exciting potential on the horizon for Han in the future of Fast and Furious.
