Harry Potter 10 Best Members Of The Order Of The Phoenix

The Order of the Phoenix were a group of people who fought against Lord Voldemort and his villainous Death Eaters during the first and wizarding wars. And while they reigned supreme in the end, what with Harry Potter himself defeating the Dark Lord at the battle of Hogwarts, it was often a group on the receiving end of blows aplenty amid their fight to keep both the wizarding and muggle communities safe.

We now take a look at the top 10 members from the group, many of which often displayed remarkable bravery, stunning ability, or unique acts of kindness along the way. Some people didn’t make it to the very end but that doesn’t matter because, without them, then Voldemort would never have fallen.

10 Albus Dumbledore

We’ve got to start with the chief member of the Order of the Phoenix, Albus Dumbledore. Dumbledore was a unique wizard, one kind-hearted at nature, but when it came to the fight against former Hogwarts pupil Tom Riddle he was ruthless, approaching the matter with bravery, intellect and logic.

It was the Hogwarts headmaster who chaired the organisation and he who called the biggest shots. And while many slipped into patches of darkness, he was always somebody who was able to see the light in everything – even when Voldemort’s rule was at its worse.

9 Severus Snape

Severus Snape was an unpleasant individual. He was rude to his students – downright bullying Harry Potter at times – and took great pleasure in seeing them squirm under his fierce gaze. But while he left plenty to be desired as a person, he was arguably the second most-important member of the Order of the Phoenix.

That’s because Snape, on two occasions, turned spy. He went undercover and, so accomplished was he at Occlumency, even managed to prevent Lord Voldemort from unmasking him. Snape passed information on the Dark Lord onto Dumbledore and stayed true to the very end, as shown in the pensieve.

8 Sirius Black

Never one to shy away from a fight, Sirius Black was at the very heart of the Order of the Phoenix during both wizarding wars. He was initially Lily and James Potter’s Secret Keeper but tragically gave the honour to Peter Pettigrew, who betrayed them to Lord Voldemort. But, despite that major error of judgement, he was wrong enough to recover and rejoin the Order after breaking out of Azkaban prison.

Proof of his bravery is evident in the Order of the Phoenix book and movie, where he is first to Harry’s aid when he clashes with Voldemort’s Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic. Tragically, that decision would cost him his life.

7 Minerva McGonagall

For the most part, Minerva McGonagall keeps a low profile when it comes to the Order, appearing on just a couple of occasions at headquarters 12 Grimmauld Place. But she shows her significance during the Deathly Hallows where she is able to keep the students of Hogwarts safe (for the most part) despite the castle being captured by Voldemort.

Not only that, but it’s McGonagall who spearheads the fight. She forces Snape to flee (wrongfully thinking him of a villain at this point) and then is in the very heart of the battle. The movies didn’t show it but there’s a scene in the book where she’s actually engaging Voldemort in combat alongside Horace Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt.

6 Rubeus Hagrid

“I would trust Hagrid with my life,” Albus Dumbledore tells Minerva McGonagall when dropping Harry Potter off at Number 4 Private Drive on the night of his parents were ruthlessly murdered. And while Rubeus Hagrid is reckless and impressionable his heart is always in the right price and he doesn’t ever let the man he admires so much down in the slightest.

Hagrid does important bits for the Order, none more so than when he picks up Harry from the Dursleys at the beginning of Deathly Hallows Part 2. Despite having no magical powers, he uses his remarkable piloting skills to guide the duo to safety despite Death Eaters and Voldemort himself closing in on all sides.

5 Remus Lupin

Remus Lupin is a man who has always had it difficult. He struggled with the burden of being a werewolf growing up and was part of the Order of the Phoenix who sustained so many losses during the first wizarding war. As the second fight against Voldemort gets increasingly tricky he begins to lose himself – at one point even offering to abandon his unborn child in favour of helping Harry Potter.

But that shouldn’t deter from the fact that he never shied away from battle once. Like Sirius Black, he was part of the group who rescued Harry from the Death Eaters’ clutches during their epic battle at the Department of Mysteries. He protected the school from harm during the Half Blood Prince and, at the battle of Hogwarts, he was right in the thick of the action. That valiant fighting spirit ultimately came back to bite him, however, with Antonin Dolohov slaying him.

4 Kingsley Shacklebolt

In the Order of the Phoenix movie, Kingsley Shacklebolt boldly says ‘Dumbledore has style’ despite standing in the very midst of the Ministry of Magic enemies Cornelius Fudge and Dolores Umbridge. But we think those same words apply to the man himself, who does some rather cool things throughout the course of the books.

In the Half Blood Prince, it’s revealed that Kingsley is looking after the muggle Prime Minister – having fought against Voldemort and his Death Eaters in the Department of Mysteries mere months previously. That, in itself, is a rather special job and one he does to perfection with the Prime Minister never coming to any harm.

3 Alastor Mad-Eye Moody

Harry thinks he meets Alastor Mad-Eye Moody during the Goblet of Fire book and movie – only for it to be revealed that the man he thought was his ally was actually Death Eater Barty Crouch Jr. And, while the Boy Who Lived doesn’t manage to strike up as good a relationship with the real thing as he did the imposter, that’s not to say that Moody wasn’t a key cog in the machine.

The auror fights at the Ministry of Magic and is the one who appears to become the Order of the Phoenix’s talisman when Albus Dumbledore dies. It’s Moody who issues rallying cries as people pose as Harry in order to protect him during the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and, like many of the group, pays the ultimate price. His body is never recovered but, in the same movie, it’s seen sticking out of Dolores Umbridge’s office in a rather crude and grotesque way.

2 Molly Weasley

Molly Weasley isn’t always on the battleground but she’s certainly one of our favourite members of the group. Not just because of her fiery personality but also because she has this amazing maternal aura, something she uses to protect her own children, Harry Potter and even members of the Order of the Phoenix itself from harm.

It’s Molly who constantly looks after everybody and she shows her prowess with a wand in Deathly Hallows Part 2, when she brings Bellatrix Lestrange down just as the Death Eater prepares to mock her. In the book, this act forces Voldemort to turn on her but Harry saves her, putting himself in between. Losing her, after already losing his mother, would have been too much for him to bare.

1 The Potters

We’re pairing Lily and James Potter as one here, because they always stuck together (even when Voldemort wanted them both dead) and they both died in similar circumstances.

Both were considered among the brightest witches and wizards of their age and they served the Order for years, even striking up a close relationship with Albus Dumbledore himself. Voldemort wanted them to join his side but they stayed true to what they believed in and they died together, fighting, like true members of the organisation do. Proof of their popularity and usefulness is also evident when Harry visits their memorial at Godric’s Hollow and finds it covered from top to bottom in messages of praise, sympathy and, above all, love.
