It does not seem like there are many career paths in the world of Harry Potter. The top three appear to be either the Ministry of Magic, a job in magical retail, or teach at Hogwarts. While it would be wrong to insult the shop assistants in Honeydukes Sweet Shop or the Three Broomsticks, the desired role is surely at Hogwarts; even Lord Voldemort wanted to become the defense against the dark arts professor!

This article will list 10 Hogwarts classes and 10 students who should teach them. The main two rules are that the student must have attended Hogwarts at the same time as Harry Potter and they must have survived beyond the Battle of Hogwarts (obviously).

10 Defense Against The Dark Arts – Harry Potter

Selecting a student who could teach defense against the dark arts is, possibly, the simplest choice in this list.

Harry Potter is the perfect choice for a defense against the dark arts teacher. Firstly, Potter has experience in teaching this class. In his fifth year, Harry opted to teach defense against the dark arts in response to Dolores Umbridge’s refusal to allow the students to practice defensive spells.

Harry formed a secret club called Dumbledore’s Army and taught defensive spells in the Room of Requirement. Secondly, Harry has genuine, real-world experience in fighting against the dark arts – he defeated the most powerful dark wizard of the age after all!

9 Divination – Parvati Patil

Divination is one of the more difficult skills for wizards to learn, with some, such as Hermione, believing that nothing can be learned by reading tea leaves. Nevertheless, Parvati Patil was one of the few students that Professor Trelawney claimed had a talent for divination. This talent was proven as Patil went on to receive a high mark in her OWLs and then went on to study the subject for her NEWTs.

Parvati Patil was undoubtedly the most talented of Harry’s contemporaries at the art of divination and would be the only real choice for this position.

8 Potions – Draco Malfoy

While Draco Malfoy is typically categorized as a minor villain in the Harry Potter series, he is a bright student and even became a Slytherin prefect. One of his best classes was potions, as he flourished under the tutorship of Professor Snape. While some could point to Malfoy’s childhood as a reason why he would not make a good teacher, perhaps it is for this same reason that he would work in the role.

Malfoy learned the hard way that his former beliefs and actions were horrific. Malfoy is explicit in his desire to make sure his son avoids his own childhood mistakes. Not only would Malfoy make a fantastic potions master, but he could also help keep the students from the dark arts.

7 Art – Dean Thomas

It may be surprising to read that art was a subject at Hogwarts, but it was indeed an elective from the third year onwards. The Hogwarts art class focusses on wizarding art and potentially wizarding photography.

Dean Thomas is the ideal candidate for art professor from Harry’s contemporaries. Thomas drew the Gryffindor lion for the quidditch team in his first year and also helped design a ‘Potter for president’ banner. In addition, during the Triwizard Tournament, Dean also designed several banners depicting Harry’s exploits, each showing his artistic flair. One of note depicted Harry’s clash with the Hungarian Horntail and showed Cedric Diggory with his head on fire.

6 Charms – George Weasley

The role of charms professor can be incredibly difficult to select as most of Harry’s contemporaries were more than proficient at the subject. However, one of the best fits for the role of charms professor would be George Weasley. The one-eared brother of Fred and Ron, George Weasley was incredibly talented at charms and it was one of the few OWLs that he actually attempted to receive.

George’s talent at charms can also be seen in the business venture with his twin, as their Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes’ products required great skill in charms to function. Furthermore, Professor Flitwick was so impressed by Fred and George’s portable swamp charm that he allowed part of it to remain in Hogwarts.

Charms class with George Weasley would certainly be entertaining!

5 Transfiguration – Percy Weasley

While Percy Weasley may appear to be an odd addition to this list, he certainly deserves to be here. While many students on this list were more than capable of transfiguring objects, Percy Weasley was known to be able to transfigure people.

This is an exceptionally difficult skill to hone. The most notable instance of Percy transfiguring another human was during the Battle of Hogwarts. Percy was dueling Pius Thicknesse and, not only defeated him but also transfigured him into a sea urchin.

Not only is Percy exceptionally talented at transfiguration but he was also a school prefect. This would make him a natural choice for a teacher.

4 Herbology – Neville Longbottom

This is another easy placement on this list. Neville Longbottom was not known for excelling in many areas at Hogwarts. However, one area in which he was above the rest of the class was in herbology. As Mad-Eye Moody (Barty Crouch Jr) said in The Goblet of Fire, Longbottom has a “knack for herbology.” This was certainly more than just a knack, however. Neville went on to receive such a high mark for herbology in his OWLs that it made up for his pitiful potions mark.

Additionally, Neville also teamed up with Professor Sprout to weaponize a Devil’s Snare during the Battle of Hogwarts. Longbottom would go on to become the Herbology professor at Hogwarts, so there is also canon support for this choice (although it may be considered cheating).

3 Arithmancy – Hermione Granger

Arithmancy is a magical discipline focussed around numerology and predicting the future using numbers. The class is notoriously difficult and requires an intense study of complicated numerical charts. Hermione seemed the natural fit for this role, not only due to the fact that she was the brightest witch of her age, but also because she claimed arithmancy was her favorite class at Hogwarts.

It was incredibly difficult to just place Hermione into one category. One could easily have placed Hermione into several teaching roles, but Arithmancy appeared to suit her best. While charms and transfiguration could have easily suited Granger, a talent at arithmancy is something that is almost unique to Hermione.

2 Care Of Magical Creatures – Luna Lovegood

Luna Lovegood may be a surprising addition to this post, but it makes perfect sense when considering her post-Hogwarts life. After graduating from Hogwarts, Luna Lovegood went on to become a famous magizoologist (wizarding naturalist). This required Luna to travel across the world, traveling to far and strange places in order to study species and discover creatures that had previously never been seen.

Luna’s experience in magizoology would make her perfect to teach the care of magical creatures class at Hogwarts. Her fame in the wizarding world would also certainly bring new students to the class.

If Luna’s interest in magical creatures was not enough to make her a fantastic candidate for this teaching position, Luna also went on to marry Rolf Scamander, the grandson of Newt Scamander.

1 Flying – Ginny Weasley

Flying is an obligatory class for first years but does persist through later years as an optional class for students who wish to improve their flying skills. The most natural choice for this role is Ginny Weasley. Not only did Ginny play as a chaser for the Gryffindor quidditch team, but she could also play as a seeker. Even though she was not as experienced in the latter role as Cho Chang, Ginny was able to beat her to the snitch.

If her school experience at flying was not enough, Ginny also went on to play quidditch professionally for the Holyhead Harpies. This would make her incredibly qualified to teach the flying class at Hogwarts.
