The Ministry of Magic in the Harry Potter books is a rather complex institution that plays many roles in the series. While at the beginning it’s a rather neutral presence in Harry’s life, it becomes more sinister as the books go on. Cornelius Fudge and his administration do a lot of harm in the books, and then, the Ministry becomes taken over by Voldermort and his followers.By the end, it was the Ministry that was responsible for some of the worst things to occur in the books and movies.

While there are a lot of horrible things that happen because of the Ministry, there are also a lot of smaller details about it that are really confusing. Here are ten things about the Ministry of Magic that don’t make any sense.

10 ARTHUR WEASLEY’S DEPARTMENT

While it’s true that it’s a small department, it seems strange and rather kind of rude that he has the only office that is so disrespected.

9 THE DISDAIN FOR MAGICAL BEINGS THAT AREN’T HUMAN

The large statue in the atrium of the Ministry is a great example of how the Ministry, and many witches and wizards, view beings such as house-elves, centaurs, and goblins. Their oppression of these beings might not be surprising, but it’s also deeply upsetting.

8 THE TRACE ON UNDERAGE WIZARDS

In the books, it’s explained that underage wizards have a trace on them that allows the Ministry to detect when they’ve done magic. This is how Harry was able to get in trouble for doing magic during the summers.

However, the way the trace works doesn’t allow the Ministry to be able to tell who actually did the magic. This is why Dobby is able to do so but Harry gets in trouble for it. This seems like a huge flaw in the system, and it seems like the spell shouldn’t work like this.

7 LETTING HERMIONE USE A TIME TURNER

With this in mind, it’s very strange that Hermione is allowed to use one when she is only 13-years old. It seems silly to let a teenager use such a powerful object just for the purpose of taking extra classes. She could have just been made to drop a class or two.

6 USING INTERDEPARTMENTAL MEMOS

This is just one of many examples of how the wizarding world often has a lot less common sense and isn’t as efficient as Muggles. Using memos speeding around above everyone’s heads seems a lot less practical than email.

5 WHY THERE DOESN’T SEEM TO BE ANY BRANCH OF IT FOR SOCIAL SERVICES

It’s outlined pretty clearly in the books which departments exist within the Ministry of Magic. There is the Department of Mysteries, Department of Magical Law Enforcement, Department of Magical Transportation, and many more, each with their own specific function and purpose. However, one of the things that is obviously missing is departments for social services.

It’s not clear at all if the Ministry gives things like financial aid or has programs to help with equality. It seems strange for a government to not have any of these services.

4 THE EXISTENCE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MYSTERIES

In more ways than one, this strange department makes sense given that this is a magical world that functions differently than ours. However, the extreme secrecy surrounding it is definitely off-putting. It seems mostly to be a department that’s about exploring and experimenting with magic and nothing more.

Simply put, magical mysteries don’t really make sense as such a big focus that warrants an entire government department. Regardless, it does make for some interesting and unique scenes when Harry and his friends go there.

3 HOW EXTREME THE LEGAL SYSTEM IS

Legal systems in most governments have their downsides. No legal system is perfect by any means and punishment for crimes isn’t always fair. However, the Ministry of Magic definitely takes this to the next level.

The wizarding prison is full of guards who literally suck all the good feelings out of a person. This seems to be the only actual prison in existence in the wizarding world. So, whether someone is a murderer or just stole too many things, they would all be subjected to a fate worse than death.

2 WHY CERTAIN THINGS LIKE LOVE POTIONS AREN’T ILLEGAL

There also seems to be a big disparity between the things that are legal and the things that aren’t. The fact that a student doing underage magic is met with a warning and eventually their wand being taken away seems like a lot when you consider that potions like love potions are perfectly legal.

A love potion takes away someone’s ability to consent to a relationship, effectively altering their mind and robbing them of free will. This is definitely a substance that should be outlawed, along with many others.
