The Harry Potter series is an example of stellar world building. The magic, the locations, the histories, the politics – everything is done remarkably well, and it all makes a glorious kind of sense.

Unfortunately, the movies leave out a lot of the rich world building that Rowling’s novels accomplish. The films rarely venture into Hogsmeade, and when they do, it’s solely for story purposes. As such, movie viewers may not know much about this magical place. But trust the book readers – this place deserves to be known. These are ten things that movie lovers, or casual fans, may not have known about Hogsmeade.

10 It’s The Only All-Wizarding Village

The movies never really go into detail, but Hogsmeade is actually the only all-wizarding village located in Britain. Perhaps this has to do with its very close proximity to Hogwarts.

In all other locations throughout the island nation, wizards are mixed and intermingled with muggles. Some places are more wizard-heavy than others, but no matter the location, it is peppered with unknowing muggles. But not Hogsmeade.

9 It Was Founded By Hengist Of Woodcroft

Hengist of Woodcroft is a Medieval wizard who attended Hogwarts some time in the late 9th to early 10th century. He was sorted into Hufflepuff and may have been been personally taught by Helga Hufflepuff, the founder of the house.

He founded the village of Hogsmeade after he was driven out of his home by Muggles, which could be another reason for the village’s all-wizards status.

8 Students First Started Visiting In 1714

It wasn’t always tradition for the students of Hogwarts to visit Hogsmeade. An Edict was established in 1714 (fittingly titled the 1714 Edict) that allowed third years and older to attend Hogsmeade on certain weekends.

Various rules and regulations were put in place, including the exclusion of first and second years for whatever reason (perhaps they’re too young and rowdy).

7 Hogsmeade Served As A Military Outpost

Despite being made of literal magic, the magic world is not perfect. Like ours, it is subjected to prejudice and discrimination.

These problems are particularly felt between wizards and goblins, as the latter are often persecuted by the former. This resulted in the famous Goblin Rebellion of 1612, which took place near the village of Hogsmeade. During the violent rebellion, the wizards set up a military headquarters in an unidentified Hogsmeade inn.

6 It Hosted The Very First Magical Waterplants Festival

Not much is known about the so-called Magical Waterplants Festival. In fact, the festival is never mentioned in Rowling’s novels – it’s briefly mentioned in a newspaper (dated November 1926) in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

All audiences know is that the festival concerns magical aquatic plants and that Hogsmeade was the very first village to host the festival.

5 Eight Passages To Hogwarts

It’s made explicitly clear in Prisoner of Azkaban that there is a secret passage between Hogwarts and Hogsmeade, as Harry successfully sneaks in with his Invisibility Cloak. However, there are actually eight passages between the school and the village (for reasons unknown).

These include Hogwarts to Honeydukes (the one seen in Prisoner), the Whomping Willow to the Shrieking Shack (again seen in Prisoner), the Room of Requirement to Hog’s Head Inn (seen in Deathly Hallows), one behind a mirror on the fourth floor of Hogwarts, and one behind a statue. Three more exist but they are vigilantly watched by Filch.

4 Dervish And Banges

Many shops exist on the High Street of Hogsmeade, many of which never make an appearance in the Harry Potter films.

One of these shops is Dervish and Banges, which reportedly repairs various wizarding equipment. Harry meets Sirius in his dog form near Dervish and Banges in the Goblet of Fire novel, and it’s mentioned in a deleted scene of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

3 Gladrags Wizardwear

Another unique shop located in Hogsmeade is Gladrags Wizardwear, which specializes in weird novelty clothing items. The store was founded in 1750 (shortly after the Edict that allowed students to visit Hogsmeade) and has two other branches in London and Paris.

A coupon for the store can briefly be spotted in the Order of the Phoenix film, but the protagonists visit Gladrags in chapter 27 of Goblet of Fire to buy Dobby a unique pair of socks.

2 The Hogwarts Express Stops In Hogsmeade

What movie viewers may not know is that the Hogwarts Express doesn’t stop at Hogwarts, but Hogsmeade. The Hogsmeade Station is a quaint little place that connects the village with Hogwarts via a long road that extends around the Black Lake.

Returning students seemingly take the road itself, while first year students enter via the lake, as seen in Philosopher’s Stone. The station was reportedly built in the early 19th century after the Ministry began utilizing trains for transportation.

1 Residents

Not much is known about the permanent residents of Hogsmeade. There’s Rosmerta, the landlady of the Three Broomsticks (she is seen in The Prisoner of Azkaban), and Aberforth Dumbledore, the owner of the Hog’s Head Inn (and brother of Dumbledore, of course).

Other shop owners include Puddifoot (Puddifoot’s Tea Shop), Ambrosius Flume and his unnamed wife (Honeydukes), and Dominic Maestro (Dominic Maestro’s).
