As one of Harry Potter’s antagonist, Dolores Umbridge did a lot to make the characters and fans hate her. Here are some of the worst things she did.

The magical world of Harry Potter’s biggest adversary throughout the series was obviously Lord Voldemort – but the repulsive Dolores Umbridge would certainly have to come a close second. Umbridge is introduced in the fifth book and movie entitled Order of the Phoenix and also appears in the penultimate blockbuster of the franchise, Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

We now take a look at the 10 worst things she did during her two appearances which, when you consider how many vile things she did, is easier said than done.

10 Vote For Harry To Be Expelled

Using magic outside of Hogwarts while you’re still a student is forbidden in the magical world, most likely to protect Muggles. However, Harry is forced into using a Patronus Charm on two Dementors from Azkaban jail when they swoop in on him and his cousin, Dudley Dursley, during the summer of 1995.

Obviously, a Patronus Charm is the last spell you’d use unless you absolutely had to. Despite this, though, Umbridge still votes to expel Harry from Hogwarts. What’s even worse is that it’s later revealed in the book that it was she who sent the Dementors – all to land the Boy Who Lived in hot water.

9 Insult Cedric Diggory’s Memory

At the end of the Goblet of Fire, Albus Dumbledore gives a speech about the death of Cedric Diggory to the Hogwarts students in the Great Hall. Here, he informs them just how the Triwizard Tournament perished and that Lord Voldemort himself was responsible. He even says that doing otherwise would be an insult to the boy’s memory.

But that doesn’t stop Umbridge from insisting that Voldemort WASN’T behind Cedric’s death – and that it was merely a tragic accident instead. Harry protests this and, as a result, is put in detention.

8 Torture Students

Detention isn’t exactly ideal for us normal folk. But it’s a lot worse for Harry because of what Umbridge makes him do during their time in her office.

She gives him a quill and parchment, ordering him to write lines – which seems simple and boring enough. However, the Boy Who Lived is left horrified when he finds the same lines he’s writing draw blood from his own hand, re-appearing and vanishing. Umbridge doesn’t hold this punishment exclusively for Harry, dishing it out to members of Dumbledore’s Army too.

7 Kick Trelawney Out

Despite being new at Hogwarts, Umbridge is given plenty of power due to her close relationship with the Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge. And, as a result of the powers, she’s given, she’s able to remove Sybil Trelawney from the post of Divination Professor.

Trelawney isn’t a good teacher but Umbridge’s brutal treatment towards her is shocking. She even tries to kick the Divination expert out of Hogwarts entirely and would have succeeded had it not been for Albus Dumbledore and Minerva McGonagall, who both fight her corner.

6 Remove Harry, Fred, and George From Quidditch Team

This bit isn’t actually shown in the Order of the Phoenix movie but it makes this list nonetheless. In the book, Harry, Fred, and George are goaded by Draco Malfoy and snap, going to attack the Slytherin student after a Quidditch match.

It’s not exemplary behavior from the trio, granted, but what happens next is so unnecessary. Umbridge boots all three of them off the Gryffindor team, all while letting Malfoy off the hook. She also takes their broomsticks, chaining them to her office – before the Weasley twins get them back and flee Hogwarts for good.

5 Prepare To Use An Illegal Curse

Towards the end of the Order of the Phoenix book, Umbridge catches Harry using the Floo Network inside her office to try and contact Sirius Black, who he fears to have been captured by Lord Voldemort. Dolores, though, wrongly believes him to be attempting to speak to Dumbledore – who is wanted by the Ministry of Magic for treason.

In order to coax information from Harry, Umbridge demonstrates a willingness to use the Cruciatus Curse to ‘loosen his tongue’. Potter is saved from torture thanks to some quick thinking from Hermione Granger, who takes them to the Forbidden Forest under the pretense of finding a secret weapon.

4 Attack Minerva McGonagall and Rubeus Hagrid

Again, this is a scene that doesn’t make it into the movie – but does happen in the book. Umbridge, not content with already ousting Dumbledore from Hogwarts, then goes on the offensive and tries to remove Rubeus Hagrid from his position as Care of Magical Creature’s teacher as well.

She isn’t successful, with Hagrid managing to get away thanks to his brutish giant blood. McGonagall attempts to come to his defense, though and is hit in the chest with several stunning spells. Thankfully she’s able to recover but she’s forced into spending time at the wizarding infirmary, St Mungo’s.

3 Abuse Centaurs

Centaurs are majestic creatures to look at. Umbridge, however, doesn’t think like that and goes on a massive, abusive tirade against them when she’s taken by Hermione to the Forbidden Forest.

Thankfully, though, this proves to be her undoing. She’s taken by them into the heart of the Forest, subjected to something that we never find out but changed as a result. They’d have likely killed her had it not been for Dumbledore, who uses his charm to convince them to let her go.

2 Nail Mad-Eye Moody’s Eye To Door

When we next see Umbridge in the Deathly Hallows book and Deathly Hallows: Part 1 movie, she’s back to being vile again. And, in what surely has to rank as possibly THE worst things she’s ever done, she nails the eye of the deceased Mad-Eye Moody to her door at the Ministry of Magic.

Moody is killed earlier on at the hands of Lord Voldemort and what happens to his body is unknown. Upon seeing the eye, however, Harry takes action. He wrenches it out and takes it back which, when you consider how much of a mentor the dead Auror was, is the right and respectful thing to do.

1 Wrongly Put Muggles In Jail

When Harry, Ron, and Hermione infiltrate the Ministry of Magic undercover, they find Umbridge sentencing ‘Muggle-borns’ to Azkaban prison. With being of non-magical blood now illegal because of Lord Voldemort, the former Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher takes great pleasure in subjecting them to severe emotional torment.
