In the Harry Potter series, even though Harry is orphaned when he is a baby and is raised by horrible relatives, he does have a fair amount of parental figures and mentors during his time at Hogwarts. Molly and Arthur Weasley provide him a family environment and look out for him often, but two of his most obvious parental figures are Sirius Black and Rubeus Hagrid.

While Sirius is officially Harry’s godfather and he does a lot to protect him, there are also many reasons why Hagrid was the better father figure in Harry’s life.

10 Hagrid: He was there for Harry as soon as he went to Hogwarts

Hagrid is the person who really welcomes Harry to the wizarding world and provides support to him there. He already cared for Harry since he was the one who took him from the rubble of Godric’s Hollow, and he clearly is committed to helping Harry and looking out for him from the moment he arrives at the school.

9 Sirius: Because he tried to help Harry after his parents died

While Hagrid might be the one to take Harry to Dumbledore, Sirius also is there at the sight of the destruction trying to help Harry. Hagrid doesn’t let him because he’s under order to rescue Harry from Dumbledore, but Sirius is trying to be a good godfather. He even offers to let Hagrid take his flying motorbike to take Harry away more quickly.

8 Hagrid: Throughout the years, Hagrid was one of his biggest supporters

All throughout Harry’s time at Hogwarts, Hagrid was one of his most steadfast supporters and helpers. He was consistently there for Harry when other adults in his life weren’t.

He was there when Ron stopped being friends with him during his fourth year and often provided a place for Harry, Ron, and Hermione to relax and hang out. This was definitely important for Harry who didn’t have a lot of safe spaces where he could unwind.

7 Sirius: When he escaped from Azkaban, the first thing he did was check on Harry

Because Sirius was framed by Pettigrew and sent to Azkaban for crimes he didn’t commit, he wasn’t able to be in Harry’s life at all for 13 years. However, as soon as he escaped from the prison, one of the first things he did was try to find Harry to see him and check on him. While this might have given Harry a fright to see a huge black dog, Sirius was clearly worried about Harry and still felt a responsibility to him.

6 Hagrid: He helped Harry with the first task and more

When Harry has to compete as Hogwarts champion, Hagrid is one of his biggest supporters. He helps him out immensely when he tells him about the dragons for the First Task. While this is one of the bigger examples of how he looks out for him, he also defends him against people who accused Harry of a variety of things over the years.

5 Sirius: Because he tried to give Harry a home

One of the most depressing things for Harry, and for fans, was that Harry was never able to have a home with Sirius. When Sirius thinks that he will become a free man, he talks to Harry about giving him a place to stay away from the Dursleys.

While this doesn’t happen as Sirius has to go on the run again, it does show that Sirius’ main concern is to be the godfather to Harry that he couldn’t be for so long.

4 Hagrid: He could actually be around Harry

While the fact that Sirius couldn’t be in Harry’s life much wasn’t his fault, it was still a reality. So, while Sirius helped as much as he could be given the situation, it was Hagrid who was around for Harry’s daily life. He lived right next to Hogwarts, so he could provide emotional support and keep an eye on him consistently.

3 Sirius: Because he helped Harry with the Triwizard Tournament

Sirius might not have been able to be in Harry’s life as much as he wanted, but this didn’t stop him from putting his freedom and safety at risk by living near Hogwarts during the Triwizard Tournament. He provided guidance to Harry as much as he could during this time, and he was even willing to live in caves and eat rats to be in proximity to Harry since he worried for his safety.

2 Hagrid: He was the one who carried Harry’s body from the forest

One of the most heart-wrenching Hagrid moments is when he has to carry Harry’s lifeless body from the Forbidden Forest. While Harry isn’t actually dead, Hagrid believes that he is, and the grief he feels is clearly immense. This is a symbolic moment in the books, and it’s something that a parent would definitely do.

1 Sirius: He took his role as godfather seriously

Sirius isn’t a perfect godfather by any means. During Harry’s fifth year, he gets reckless and moody, and he starts to see Harry more as James than as himself. However, despite his flaws, he does care and does his best. He clearly sees himself as officially a parental figure in Harry’s life.
