The Late Show with Stephen Colbert recently included a segment last Friday night parodying the new Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts special coming to HBO Max on January 1. This special marks the return of original Potter cast members, such as Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, to be interviewed and reminisce on their time filming the beloved franchise. The event is meant to celebrate the fact that it has been 20 years since Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was released.

The upcoming special comes off the success of the recent HBO Max Friends reunion special from earlier this year. It appears that Warner Bros. realized that they could capitalize off of these reunions that countless fans have been waiting so many years for. Radcliffe has been adamant since the early 2010s that he does not want to be involved with anything Harry Potter-related. With an apparent change of heart, he is back in a way many believed he would never be. Ever since its announcement, the reunion has been highly anticipated by Harry Potter fans everywhere, especially with the three main stars confirmed to be in attendance. While many other stars will be seen at the reunion, there’s one Hogwarts member who hasn’t been mentioned yet: The Sorting Hat.

Seen on the official Twitter account for The Late Show, Colbert’s parody mainly focused on what the Hogwarts Sorting Hat would have to say if asked back for the reunion special. The Sorting Hat is a talking magical object in the fiction that sits on first-year students’ heads and determines which House their personality and skills match the most. The Late Show was not afraid to be raunchy, as The Sorting Hat spoke about Dobby the house elf not leaving Maggie Smith alone, especially when cocaine was involved. The hat is also seen messing up lines, and having a particularly hard time trying to pronounce “Gryffindor.” The hat specifically took aim at Draco and Lucius Malfoy and called them a not-so-nice name. It is certainly interesting to imagine what kind of gossip would’ve been spread around by the students at Hogwarts. Colbert’s parody adds to the excitement surrounding the upcoming reunion special, which will be led by Helen Mirren as the host. Surely, fans have high hopes that there will be at least some juicy set secrets or new stories spilled by the Harry Potter stars next month.

Colbert’s parody was all in good fun and exaggerated the kinds of things that could be said by the stars during the special. The Late Show is known for making fun of content like this to provide comedic effect. The Harry Potter: Return to Hogwarts special will probably feature a lot of good laughs, but the cast would probably not reveal anything as wild as what’s seen in Colbert’s parody. This clip is advertising and hyping up fans for what will hopefully be a very satisfying special.
