Any fan of the Harry Potter franchise has a soft spot in their hearts for the Marauders. Well, that’s the case with at least three of the four members. We first found out about them in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The four Marauders were James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew.

They were known for creating the Marauder’s Map that Harry and the Weasley twins used frequently. The quartet was best friends who got into all sorts of shenanigans at school. But none of these guys had spotless records. They’ve all done some good and some bad during their lives. These are the best and worst things that each Marauder has ever done.

8 Pettigrew’s Worst: Killing Cedric

We’ll get the least likable Marauder out of the way first. Honestly, there’s a lot that we could have picked for the worst thing Peter Pettigrew ever did. He was the one who sold out Lily and James Potter to Voldemort, leading to their demise. He also blew up a city street and killed 13 people as he fled Sirius Black and faked his own death.

As bad as all of that was, the murder of Cedric Diggory was the worst. This was a moment we got to experience first-hand. Pettigrew hit Diggory with the killing curse and ended the life of a talented young man with a bright future. Worse, Pettigrew did it as if Diggory’s life meant nothing. A despicable act that ranks right up there with the worst things anyone in this series has ever done.

7 Pettigrew’s Best: Becoming An Animagus

There’s unfortunately not a lot of good to pick from in Peter Pettigrew’s miserable existence. As a kid in school he mostly just followed his three more talented friends around and didn’t contribute much to their adventures. As an adult, his one slight moment of redemption ended with him killing himself, so that wasn’t exactly something we’d consider “good.”

By default, the best thing that Peter Pettigrew ever did also involved following his friends. When the group figured out that Remus Lupin was a werewolf, they were eager to help. So Peter, James and Sirius all trained to become unregistered Animagi. That meant the three of them could turn into animals to keep Remus company during this tough period. Of course, even in this situation, Peter was barely a help. While James and Sirius transformed into a dog and a stag, animals powerful enough to combat a werewolf, Peter became a tiny rat.

6 James’ Worst: Bullying Snape

Throughout the series, Severus Snape showed strong disdain for Harry. We soon discovered the reason was that Snape and Harry’s father were enemies in school. Snape was in love with Lily, but she ended up falling for James and that didn’t help things. Harry never believed that his father was mean to Snape. But that all changed when Harry got an official glimpse of the past.

He got to see his father and Sirius picking on Snape. They teased him, called him names and found new ways to humiliate him in front of their peers. When Harry saw it, he felt sick to his stomach. Though James was never painted as a bad guy, he clearly had some undesirable traits about him. Sirius was also guilty of this and he later admitted to Harry that he wasn’t proud of the way they acted towards Snape.

5 James’ Best: Sacrificing Himself

Even if you’re a cruel teenager to a peer, one way to automatically redeem yourself is by protecting your family at all costs. That’s exactly what James Potter did. Voldemort had failed to recruit the Potters on several occasions. But he began going after them for another reason: a prophecy that said a child would be his downfall coincided with Harry’s date of birth. Peter Pettigrew gave up the Potter’s location and Voldemort was after them.

With his life on the line in front of Voldemort, James sent Lily and baby Harry away. He knew he was no match against the Dark Lord, but he was willing to fight him off if it meant his family might have a chance to survive. Though it ultimately resulted in his death, it was the greatest thing James ever did. Without it, Lily may not have had the chance to protect Harry with love and the entire story of Harry might have never come to fruition.

4 Remus’ Worst: Trying To Leave His Pregnant Wife

It came from out of nowhere, but the relationship between Nymphadora Tonks and Remus Lupin became a beloved one. They were madly in love, but Remus was hesitant to fully commit to her due to his lycanthropy. However, shortly after Dumbledore’s death, the two were married. He saw how Fleur Delacour still loved Bill Weasley despite being scarred by the same werewolf who turned Remus.

Tonks eventually became pregnant and this greatly worried Remus. He felt that he cursed his unborn child with his condition. While visiting Harry, Ron, and Hermione at Grimmauld Place, Remus offered to help them on their hunt for Horcruxes. Harry saw right through this and chastised him for trying to leave his pregnant wife alone during a dangerous time. He even called him a coward. Remus was furious, but Harry was right.

3 Remus’ Best: Teaching Harry A Patronus

Readers were first introduced to Remus Lupin in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He was brought into Hogwarts as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor. Remus immediately made an impression on the students and became their favorite DADA teacher. Most readers agree that he’s the best DADA teacher of the entire series.

When Harry was having an especially difficult time dealing with Dementors, Remus stepped in to help. He didn’t have to do this. It wasn’t part of the lessons he was being paid to teach. He took Harry aside and taught him how to produce the Patronus charm, which is a tough spell to pull off. It saved Harry on multiple occasions.

2 Sirius’ Worst: Suggesting Peter As Secret Keeper

Even with every member of the Marauders being extremely close friends, times were tough when Voldemort was terrorizing the wizarding world. The stress of it led Sirius Black to distrust Remus, who he believed was possibly a spy. Instead, he put his trust in Peter Pettigrew. That was something he’d go on to regret for the rest of his life.

Worst of all, he was originally chosen to be the Secret Keeper for the Potter’s Fidelius charm. Knowing he was the obvious choice, Sirius suggested they assign that role to Peter. This was a colossal mistake, as Peter was a Voldemort follower and gave up the information, resulting in the deaths of Lily and James.

1 Sirius’ Best: Asking Harry To Live With Him

For the majority of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, we are made to believe that Sirius Black is a bad guy. He escaped Azkaban and was heading straight for Harry. However, he was actually after Peter Pettigrew. When the confrontation in the Shrieking Shack concluded, Sirius was about to be a free man.

Sirius pulled Harry aside and mentioned that he was Harry’s legal godfather. Though he only knew Harry for a few minutes, Sirius presented him with the opportunity to come live with him. Harry jumped at the chance, happy to have a father figure and to escape the Dursleys. It meant the world to him. Sirius never got the chance to fulfill that role for Harry, but the gesture was incredibly sweet.
