The Weasley family’s flying Ford Anglia made its debut early in the Harry Potter franchise, but there were almost plans for it to reappear in the final film. The light blue vehicle, enchanted by the family patriarch so it could fly, was introduced in 2002’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The Ford was also a key element of the book series by J.K. Rowling on which the movies were based. At some point, there were plans to bring back the iconic car for a major sequence later in the series, but Rowling nixed the idea.

The flying Ford Anglia made a handful of memorable appearances throughout Chamber of Secrets. It first appeared in the first act of the plot when Ron, Fred, and George Weasley used the car to rescue Harry from the Dursley home. Not only was the family stopping Harry from contacting the Wizarding World, but Dobby the house-elf was also actively preventing the young wizard from returning to Hogwarts. The three Weasley boys drove their friend back to the Burrow, the home of the big family. Mrs. Weasley was pleased to see Harry, but she was furious with her sons for taking the enchanted vehicle. Ron certainly didn’t learn any lessons because he and Harry later used the flying Ford to get to Hogwarts after Dobby closed the entrance to Platform 9 3/4. When the pair got to school grounds, the car began breaking down and eventually crashed into the Whomping Willow, resulting in discipline for the boys.

During a deleted scene in the film, Ron mentioned that the Ford had turned while after it was left in the Forbidden Forest. This was a line of dialogue taken in the novel, which was expanded by the fact that the car saved Harry and Ron from Aragog’s family. The car supposedly returned to the forest and didn’t serve as a vital component of the plot. The fate of the Ford Anglia was unclear, but that almost wasn’t the case since Rowling considered bringing the vehicle back during the Battle of Hogwarts. While writing the book series, the author hinted that the car would return, which would have paved a way to bring it back in the final movie installment. Of course, that never came to fruition.

Rowling Abandoned The Idea Of Bringing Back The Flying Ford Anglia

Rowling considered bringing back the Ford Anglia for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows for the climactic battle against Lord Voldemort. There was a plan for Ron to be targeted by Death Eaters before the car would have flown out of the Forbidden Forest, driving the enemies right into the castle wall. After defending Ron, the car’s headlights would have slowly gone out like it passed away following the heroic act.

In the end, Rowling pushed aside the idea to bring back the Ford Anglia, claiming the situation would have been a bit absurd. That said, fans probably would have gotten a kick out of the scene during the live-action adaptation of the battle in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, especially since it would have served as a special callback. Rather than bring back the car or mention its fate by the end of the Harry Potter franchise, it was presumed that the flying Ford Anglia would have stopped working after being left in the Forbidden Forest too long.
