In A Nightmare on Elm Street, Nancy Thompson proved to be a formidable opponent for Freddy Krueger, but the dream stalker eventually killed her off. While A Nightmare on Elm Street’s ending was hard to make sense of – mostly thanks to studio demands for a sequel hook – writer/director Wes Craven did very much intend for Nancy to have conquered her fear of Freddy, and by proxy conquered him. She didn’t return for A Nightmare on Elm Street 2, which was probably for the best, considering how oddly plotted that sequel turned out to be.

Craven had no involvement in Nightmare 2, but when it came time for 1987’s A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, the iconic horror director set out to craft a direct sequel to his first film. While Craven ended up only being one of several credited writers for Dream Warriors, part of his influence involved the return of heroine Nancy, once again played by Heather Langenkamp.

With Freddy (Robert Englund) targeting seemingly suicidal teens at the Westin Hills psychiatric hospital, a now adult graduate student Nancy is brought in to help, as she’s understandably embarked on groundbreaking research into nightmares. Nancy ultimately assists Kristen Parker (Patricia Arquette) and the other Dream Warriors in defeating Freddy, but not before the Springwood Slasher finally laid her to rest.

Thanks to information revealed by the ghost of Freddy’s mother, Amanda Krueger, it’s determined that Freddy’s bones need to be buried in hallowed ground for his spirit to be defeated. Nancy’s love interest Dr. Neil Gordon sets off with her father Donald to do this in reality, while Nancy, Kristen, and friends battle him in the dream world. Near the end of the film, Freddy’s skeleton springs to life and kills Donald, seemingly drawn there by his remains being disturbed. Back in the dream realm, Donald appears surrounded by bright light, and looks to be saying goodbye to his daughter before heading on to the after life.

Nancy hugs her father, but it was Freddy all along, who transforms back into himself, stabs her with his knife glove, and growls “die.” Nancy gets in one last act of heroism before she passes on though, attacking Freddy long enough for Neil to finish Freddy’s burial and send him packing until the following year’s A Nightmare on Elm Street sequel. In a way though, Nancy got the last laugh, kinda sorta returning in 1994’s Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, a meta film which sees Heather Langenkamp (as herself) “play Nancy one last time.” Sadly, all the remaining Dream Warriors would be killed off in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4.
