With the rumors that HBO may be working on a new Harry Potter series, fans are wondering what angle a show could take – and of course, with such a wildly popular franchise, the possibilities are almost endless. The only two options that aren’t really on the cards would be a prequel of the First Wizarding War, as this is already being covered with Fantastic Beasts, or the adventures of Harry’s son, as this is in The Cursed Child. Beyond that, though, a series could cover anything.

Some fans may want an Order of the Phoenix prequel, or a totally separate spin-off about life in the wizarding world, but others may be hoping that a new installment in the Harry Potter canon could answer some questions left by the original series. With multiple storylines unresolved after the Deathly Hallows, there is plenty fodder for a series, here.

10 Ludo Bagman’s Life On The Run

Ludo Bagman is primarily a book character, involved in the Quidditch World Cup, the Triwizard Tournament… and some illegal betting activity. After he runs afoul of some Goblins, though, he goes on the run rather than pay them what he owes. That’s the end of Ludo, other than a few references, so what happened to the ex-Quidditch player? This could be a harder sell for a series, given that he isn’t a major movie character, but fans still want to know what happened to him.

9 Wizarding University

The vagaries of the Wizarding school system are one of the biggest plotholes in the Harry Potter universe, as it seems that children are simply… not taught, or homeschooled, until the age of eleven, when they go to Hogwarts (and even then, attendance isn’t mandatory). There is also no mention of wizarding university, suggesting that the years at Hogwarts are literally the only education a wizard gets. A series explaining this (maybe taking a look at post-Hogwarts education and career options) would definitely be helpful in answering some questions.

8 The Muggle Prime Minister

The Muggle Prime Minister is mentioned a few times in the series (more so in the books than the films, unsurprisingly), but how he deals with the end of the Second Wizarding War is left very much up in the air.

Muggle-wizard relations, in general, leave a whole lot of questions, and with Kingsley Shacklebolt somehow protecting the PM, and then becoming Minister himself (at the same time? who was protecting the PM during the Battle of Hogwarts?), there’s definitely some potential here for a series exploring the magical world from a political perspective.

7 SPEW And The House Elves

As SPEW and Winky were entirely omitted from the movies, this might be another difficult series to pull off – but there are plenty of ways around it. Another young witch or wizard might decide to take up the cause of the House Elves, and a series based on the House Elves might be interesting. Book fans know that there are plenty of them at Hogwarts – and seeing the school from this perspective could be incredible, if it is done well.

6 12 Grimmauld Place

12 Grimmauld Place was an important part of the Harry Potter series – first, as the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, and then as a hideout for Harry, but what happened to it afterward is unknown. Harry, Ron, and Hermione stopped using it when they feared it was compromised, and opened to the Death Eaters, but after they were defeated, what happened to the house? Seeing Harry move in, and using it as a magical sitcom-setting for the characters in their 20s could be a fun twist, or simply exploring the house through the ages may also be cool (and a unique take, jumping from time to time).

5 Beauxbatons & Durmstrang

In The Goblet Of Fire, fans learned that Hogwarts is not the only wizarding school in existence… there are at least two others, Durmstrang and Beauxbatons. Not much is learned about either school, other than a general feeling, the head teachers, and the uniforms – which makes them a great concept for a spin-off series. Exploring how these schools work, and with a whole new crop of students and teachers, might be a way to recapture that original magic.

4 Azkaban & Dementors

A huge question after the end of the films was the fate of Azkaban – and the Dementors. The Dementors themselves abandoned their posts and stopped working with the Ministry, and can be assumed to simply be in hiding now – but what happened to Azkaban?

It’s no secret that series based in prisons are often hits, and with so many Death Eaters and criminals on the run, a show about Aurors hunting them down and putting them back behind bars could be a great take.

3 The Dursleys’ Fate

The Dursley’s are among the most hated of the Harry Potter characters, given how they treat Harry – but what happens to them isn’t clear. They flee the home before Harry’s protection lifts, and it is revealed that Dudley and Harry actually stay in touch, but there is a whole lot missing here. It would make for a great series to look at things from Dudley’s point of view, especially during the Second Wizarding War, and afterwards, as he rebuilds his life and his connection to his cousin.

2 Defense Against The Dark Arts

It was said that Tom Riddle cursed the Defence Against The Dark Arts position at Hogwarts – so now that he is dead, has this been lifted? Might Hogwarts students get a consistent and capable teacher for the post? Seeing the story of the person brave enough to take it on – and maybe prove they are worthy by lifting the curse, sword-in-the-stone style, could be a great miniseries.

1 What About Grawp?

Finally, fans have questions about Grawp, Hagrid’s half-brother. As a half-giant, he isn’t safe with the giants, but what happened to him? Did he get a size-appropriate space in Hogsmeade? Did he stay near the school? In terms of a fish out of water series, seeing Grawp attempt to adjust to life with Hagrid could be a hilarious next step – although the simplicity of the premise and the sheer cost of the CGI would probably get in the way.
