After an over two year hiatus, Fox’s cooking competition series, Hell’s Kitchen, is back for season 19. The reality TV drama with the world’s most iconic celebrity chef serving the world’s most brutal insults has returned. This time the whole season is coming to us from Las Vegas. With Sin City comes brand new challenges, rewards, and punishments. To top off an already exciting new season, the cast of chefs is extremely promising. From the hilarious and talented Syann Williams to the wildly arrogant energizer bunny, Marc Quiñones, each contestant is a bold personality we won’t soon forget. While we certainly all tune into Hell’s Kitchen to get a good dose of the incomparable Gordon Ramsay, at the end of the day, the contestants really make the show.

Past contestants have gone on to mark their mark for a variety of reasons. There are plenty of glorious success stories à la season 3 winner, Rock Harper. Christina Wilson, who won season 10, is returning to Hell’s Kitchen for the fourth season in a row as the Red Team’s sous chef. She’s also been named Corporate Executive Chef, U.S. Division of Gordon Ramsay’s Restaurant Group. Then there’s Jason Santos, season 7’s runner up. Jason went on to open four successful Boston-area restaurants and is returning to Hell’s Kitchen as the Blue Team’s sous chef on season 19. Sadly, six former contestants have tragically passed away.

In April 2017, former season 16 contestant, Paul “Paulie” Giganti was found dead in his home in Philadelphia. Just 36 years old, Paulie died of an accidental drug overdose one year after his appearance on the competition series. The owner of Birra, where Paulie worked for five years, said, “He brought a consistency to our product which is why we are still around. We did a little bit better than a lot of people because of him.” In 2018, former season 12 contestant, Jessica Vogel died in a New Jersey hospital after receiving treatment for colitis, chronic inflammation of the colon, at age 34. She and her fiancé, John Michael Keyser, were planning on opening a restaurant together.

In November 2019, season 4’s runner up, Louis Petrozza passed away after battling lung cancer. And in 2010, Aaron Song passed away from diabetes complications. Aaron, who appeared on season 3, is the only contestant to pass away after having to leave the show due to health complications. Aaron had been struggling with his health when he passed out during a team punishment after losing that day’s challenge. He was rushed to the hospital and sadly not cleared to return to the competition. He died three years later at 51.

Two season 2 contestants have died. In 2012, Keith Greene was found at 11 a.m. by a couple walking along the shore near Wyandanch Lane Beach. He was 35 and had drowned. No one could believe it. A former coworker, Jessica Kiesman said, “he grew up here his whole life and was always in the water.” She was completely shocked, “he was a strong swimmer.” Keith was married with a 2-year-old daughter and a 1-year-old son. Finally, in 2007, Rachel Brown, who was eliminated sixth on season 2, shot herself in her Texas home not long after her Hell’s Kitchen appearance. She was 41 and left behind a girlfriend. Her sister, Dr. Mary Brown, said that Rachel “was a delight.”
