There are actors who take their characters very seriously, and then there’s Henry Cavill. The star of The Witcher who plays Geralt of Rivia – beloved by book readers and gamers alike – is also a huge fan of the games, having played them “two and a half” times on various difficulty settings. He’s a big gamer in general and prefers playing to going out, making him a perfect fit for Geralt.
Although a gamer, he had actually not read the books before expressing an interest in acting in the show. After meeting with Lauren S. Hissrich, The Witcher’s showrunner, he actually realized the books were not based off the games but the other way around. As a fan, he understands the struggle many of us face when a beloved story is adapted for another medium: “I want to do it as true to the lore as possible. For me it was about bringing my love for the character to the show, as a fan – I want to protect it. It would’ve hurt my heart to hear there was a show that I didn’t jump on, [especially] if someone else had a unique and perhaps even brilliant interpretation of Geralt, but one not who I, as a fan, sees,” he said in an interview.
Talking to GQ Magazine, he revealed that going out stresses him because he’s always aware that people are looking at him and taking pictures of him. “At home, I get to sit playing games for ridiculous amounts of hours and escape there, because going outside has the opposite effect,” he says.
The fact that he’s such a fan of the franchise has affected the show as well. For example, he insisted that Signs — a primitive magic type used by witchers — be added to the show, in spite of them straining the CGI budget: “I really wanted to push that in there, because for me the audience must know he can do these things. It mattered to me, because it’s all part of being a witcher.”
Henry Cavill certainly feels like the voice of all silent, relatively introverted gamers and fantasy fans. He understands what’s important to gamers, and this makes him unique in the world of Hollywood actors.
