Home Sweet Home Alone is the sixth installment in the classic holiday film franchise that began with 1990’s original Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin. The sequel/reboot stars British actor Archie Yates as Max Mercer, who defends his home from two hapless burglars (Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney).

This installment tends to lean heavier into the comedic side of things than some previous films in the franchise and, though the sequel may never fully measure up to the classic original film, there are still plenty of hilarious lines in the film that are worth revisiting.

Rich People

Gavin: “Rich People, Am I Right? We’re The Worst!”

Appearing in a minor role in the film is long-running SNL cast member Kenan Thompson, playing Jeff and Pam’s real estate agent, Gavin Washington. Gavin gets more than he bargained for when working with the woebegone couple, who force him to pretend to be Jeff’s personal trainer in front of the pair’s children, who don’t know their house is being sold yet.

Though Gavin does not get much screen time, he does come off as a self-assured, perhaps somewhat narcissistic, professional. At one point, while sitting in a Christmas Eve mass, he can’t help but make a comment lumping himself in with all the other rich people that everyone else complains about.

Little Monster

Pam: “Who Raised This Little Monster?”

The Home Alone franchise is known for its intense traps and ridiculous antics that, while hilarious, often cause viewers to wonder what is going on in the mind of the child who conceived of such contraptions. While most audiences can put the thought aside, the idea that children like Max Mercer might be just a bit sadistic is never fully out of mind.

Ellie Kemper’s character Pam McKenzie voices this exact concern during the third-act heist. After suffering yet another of Max’s ingenious traps, she cries out with complete genuineness, wondering who on earth raised such a child. And, though the viewer is supposed to be on Max’s side, they likely can’t help but wonder the very same thing.

By the end of the film, when everything has been resolved and the McKenzies have regained the doll that will settle their financial problems, Hunter and Mei, his wife, share a little exchange about their discomfort at being around poor people.

Gratuitous Callback

Buzz: “When I Was A Kid, My Family Went On Vacation. We Forgot My Little Brother Kevin… Twice.”

Though many fans were disappointed that Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McAllister did not return in the new film, there was one original star who did make an appearance. Devin Ratray cameoed as Kevin’s older brother Buzz, who has become a police officer in the time since the first two films.

In his final scene in the movie, Buzz tries to explain away the Mercer family’s claim that a child had been left home alone as a prank call from his brother Kevin, who apparently does this every year at Christmas to mess with him. While it may not be a Kevin cameo, this quote is a fun callback to the original film.

Frankenstein’s Monster

Carol: “I Am So Sorry. No, He Doesn’t Look Like Frankenstein. He Looks Like Frankenstein’s Monster.”

A common misconception among the general public is that, in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, the monster is the one that goes by the titular name. This misconception is perhaps due to Hollywood’s fast-and-loose versions of the classic Frankenstein story. In fact, Frankenstein is actually the name of the doctor, making the creature Frankenstein’s monster.

This literary factoid is highlighted in an opening scene of the film, wherein Max rudely exclaims to his mother that Jeff looks like Frankenstein. Harry Potter Antics

As Jeff and Pam delve deeper and deeper into the Mercer house, Max’s traps grow more and more dangerous and sinister. What began with the two would-be robbers slipping and sliding on an icy driveway escalated into legitimate attacks that did real damage to the couple.

After Max tricked Pam into thinking he had retreated into the attic, she attempted to open the pull-down ladder, only to be berated by Nerf guns, which fired dozens of thumb-tack-tipped darts at her. She cries out in anger and frustration at her plight, including a reference to popular fantasy character Harry Potter in her exclamations.

By the time Max’s traps had been played out and the robbery was averted, the Mercer house was in shambles. Not only did the various booby traps leave a mess in all rooms of the house, but the chaos caused the chandelier in the foyer to crash to the ground, creating a gaping hole in the roof.

When Max and his mother, Carol (Aisling Bea), enter their home at the end of the film, Carol stares in wonder and awe at the destruction before her. She is left speechless as her son sheepishly offers a “very reasonable explanation” for the mess.

That’s One Way To Put It

The protagonists of Home Alone movies can either be described as geniuses or as dangers to society. While some might say that children like Max Mercer and Kevin McCallister are more akin to Jigsaw than Edison, fans can’t deny their creativity.

When Carol arrives at the McKenzie house to pick up Mercer after returning home from Tokyo, Jeff and Pam attempt to keep the antics of the night before from her. Jeff comments that she has a great kid (despite the torment Max had put him through), choosing to call him “creative,” rather than a number of other, more colorful adjectives.

Learning From The Juice

Jeff: “Is It Really A Crime To Steal Something That Was Stolen From You?”

Pam: “Yes! That’s What OJ Got In Trouble For… The Second Time.”

One of the funniest lines of the film comes from Pam and Jeff’s conversation while trying to decide whether or not to break into someone’s house in order to steal back something that was theirs in the first place. When Jeff asks if it is really stealing, Pam counters with a hilariously accurate OJ Simpson reference.

While younger fans may not immediately catch the allusion, older viewers will recognize the reference to OJ Simpson’s second bout with legal trouble, which eventually earned him the jail time he had avoided several years earlier. The fact that Pam compares herself and her husband to OJ does not bode well for the couple’s legal stance should they ever be prosecuted for their actions in the film.
