Well, Horizon Zero Dawn’s PC port has at least one good thing going for it: there’s no Denuvo.

Horizon Zero Dawn has been having a bit of a rough launch on PC. There are numerous reports of poor framerate, stuttering, crashes, and just overall poor optimization for all the various new hardware that the game finds itself running on. But even amidst all the furor that these bugs and glitches have caused online, Horizon Zero Dawn did do at least one thing right.

Denuvo is nowhere to be found.

This news comes directly from the PC game pirates, of all places. The website Crackwatch, which tells players if a game has been “cracked” and is therefore available to download illegally from various websites, notes that the game was cracked on the very first day of release. Not only that, but there was also no Denuvo anti-tampering software to defeat.

Not that it would have slowed the pirates down much. In recent years, Denuvo has become a minor inconvenience to pirate groups. It used to be that Denuvo could keep a game from being cracked for weeks at a time, but then that timeframe got reduced to days, and in modern times, mere hours.

And sometimes, even less than that. Ars Technica notes that both Hitman 2 and Final Fantasy XV were actually cracked before their release thanks to review copies that somehow found their way to piracy sites.

Denuvo is a controversial topic among PC gamers. While most would agree that piracy is a detrimental practice to gaming as a whole, Denuvo is seen as a cure that’s worse than the disease. Besides being wholly ineffective at actually preventing a game from being cracked, Denuvo causes noticeable performance issues in pretty much every game that it can be found in, producing poor framerate, stuttering, and other indicators of poor performance.

For this reason, many publishers are actually going back and removing Denuvo from games that have already been on the market for some time.

Horizon Zero Dawn doesn’t need Denuvo to cause performance issues, though. The game is perfectly capable of running poorly even on the beefiest machines due to apparently poor PC game optimization. Guerilla Games says they’re investigating reports of technical issues with their PC port, but who knows when that will result in a patch.
