How to Find (& Catch) Hippowdon in Pokémon BDSP

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl return players to the Sinnoh region, where they can find and catch a Hippowdon to add to their team. Hippowdon is a pure Ground-type Pokémon, which means it has full immunity to Electric-type attacks and a weakness to Water-, Grass-, and Ice-type attacks. Hippowdon’s Ground-type moves can deal 2x damage against Rock-, Steel-, Electric-, Poison-, and Fire-type Pokémon. Hippowdon is also one of the best competitive Ground-type Pokémon in BDSP, making it a highly desirable Pokémon to find and catch.

In the original Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl, players could only get a Hippowdon once they received the National Dex or if a Hippopotas was captured and evolved. The decision to make Hippowdon a post-game only Pokémon hurt the variety of available Ground-types that players could use, and Hippopotas was a rare Pokémon to find in the wild. Thanks to some quality-of-life updates, obtaining a Hippowdon is much easier in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

While trainers can catch a Hippowdon on Route 228 or find a Hippopotas in the Ruin Maniac Tunnel in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, they can get their hands on one much sooner by exploring the Grand Underground. The Grand Underground is accessible as soon as players receive the Explorer Kit key item in Eterna City. This key item can be received from the NPC in the house next to the Pokémon Center, and he will explain how to use the Explorer Kit as soon as players interact with him. Hippopotas can be found in the Rocky, Sandsear, and Big Bluff Caves of Pokémon BDSP’s Grand Underground, though players may want to catch one after they’ve defeated the Eterna City Gym Leader. Hippopotas begins evolving into Hippowdon at level 34, and, once players have the Eterna City gym badge, all Pokémon in the Grand Underground can be found closer to level 30.

Best Moves For Hippowdon In Pokémon BDSP

Hippowdon has a large variety of moves available, and some of them can only be accessed when players find and use a Heart Scale in Pokémon BDSP. Like Hippopotas, Heart Scales can be found in the Grand Underground by mining the various areas. Though they are rare, it shouldn’t take trainers more than 20 minutes to dig up two or three Heart Scales. Afterward, players should bring Hippowdon to the Move Tutor in Pastoria City, and, in exchange for a Heart Scale, he’ll teach Hippowdon some of its best moves.

The best Hippowdon moves include Stealth Rock, Slack Off, Earthquake, and Ice Fang, though it can learn other moves like Fire Fang, Thunder Fang, Crunch, and Stone Edge as well. Unfortunately, Hippowdon’s low Special Defense stat makes it challenging to use against Water-, Ice-, and Grass-type Pokémon in BDSP. These types of Pokémon typically have higher Special Attack stats as well. However, Hippowdon is still an excellent Pokémon to use and can even take on many of the Pokémon players will face in the Elite Four.
