American Horror Story: Apocalypse connected all of the series’ episodes on a single timeline, but its finale also changed it fundamentally. Not only was Apocalypse the season that confirmed the theory that all of the seasons take place in the same universe and on the same timeline, but also the one that threw a wrench into the whole thing by introducing a time-traveling element.
AHS: Apocalypse takes place in an alternate 2020 after a nuclear apocalypse has brought about an eternal winter. The season follows a group of survivors holed up in an underground bunker known as Outpost 3. As events unfold, Michael Langdon (Cody Fern) comes to Outpost 3. Michael, as it turns out, is one of the babies born at the end of season one, Murder House, and he is the antichrist responsible for bringing about the events of the apocalypse. Knowing this to be true, the witches from season three, Coven, form an elaborate plan to stop him from bringing about the ruin of humanity. However, to do so, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) sacrifices herself so that Mallory (Billie Lourd) has the strength to travel back in time to 2015 and prevent the apocalypse by running Michael over in the street, killing him before he can bring about the end of the world.
In the Apocalypse finale, after killing Michael in the past, Mallory says, “Changing the past. A part of me will always wonder what it truly means for the future.” This statement highlights the fact that while she may have prevented some bad things from happening, she can’t really stop them all. Although Mallory’s actions do prevent the apocalypse, thereby erasing most of the events that take place over season eight, they also forever alter those of other seasons, including Coven, Hotel, and, most notably, Murder House.
How AHS Apocalypse’s Ending Changes The Series’ Timeline
The most obvious change to American Horror Story’s overall timeline, other than the apocalypse never happening, is to some of the events that take place at Murder House. Interestingly, most of what happens in the actual season one remain intact. The Harmons move into the house and Vivian still dies giving birth to twins Michael and Jeffry (who dies during childbirth) in the finale. From there, Michael lives and is taken in by Constance, but when he grows up overnight and kills the housekeeper, she kicks him out, which is where the stories diverge. In the original, Constance (Jessica Lange) ends her life, trapping her soul at Murder House, and Michael finds his way to the Satanists, where he gains the support he needs to bring about the apocalypse. In the new timeline, however, Michael is killed and none of these events take place.
That being said, if Vivian is no longer destined to be the mother of the antichrist, it’s possible she and her family are never drawn to live at Murder House, thereby essentially erasing season one. As seen in the finale of Apocalypse, Timothy and Emily, the young couple who are first introduced at the beginning of the season, become the new parents to a boy who may be the new antichrist. It’s possible this new boy will discover Murder House for himself as he goes in search of his purpose when he’s a little older, just as Michael did, and that the witches from Coven will try to stop him. Also, given the fact that Michael became a grown man so quickly, it seems likely this new version of the antichrist could appear in future seasons.
