How Assassins Creed Valhalla Connects With Assassins Creed 3

There are a number of explorable locations in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, and one of them offers a great connection to Assassin’s Creed 3. The reveal that Vinland, an area on the northeastern coast of North America, would be accessible to players was a bit of a surprise. How and why this region would become available to players opened up a lot of interesting possibilities, and it was pretty cool to see the direction Ubisoft chose to go.

Eivor eventually discovers the identity of a certain member of the Order of the Ancients, and is tasked with traveling to Vinland to assassinate them. Upon arrival in Vinland in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Eivor encounters the Native Americans inhabiting the region and trades with them to acquire gear and information. Eventually, Eivor tracks down the member of the Order and acquires the crystal ball they were in possession of. This crystal ball is a Piece of Eden, and Eivor chooses to leave the artifact in the care of the leaders of the local tribe.

As it turns out, the tribe Eivor encounters in Vinland is the Kanien’kehá:ka tribe, the one Ratonhnhaké:ton (also known as Connor) is from in Assassin’s Creed 3. Prior to becoming an Assassin, Connor learns that his tribe was protecting both the artifact and an Isu temple that was hidden in the region. The person Eivor was tracking in Vinland was attempting to use the artifact to access this vault. While Eivor didn’t know the purpose of the Assassin’s Creed artifact, it would go on to be protected by the tribe for generations. It’s not the biggest revelation in the world, but it’s a neat little connection to a future story in the timeline.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Vinland Saga is a Pleasant Diversion

The Vinland Saga is an incredibly enjoyable side adventure in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla that was comparable to a piece of minor DLC. The reasoning for Eivor to travel all the way to Vinland is loosely connected to the story in England, it’s not a particularly long adventure, and it offers a few unique pieces of gear. But it’s a beautiful region of largely untouched nature, and it’s incredibly peaceful to explore. Areas like this are great in large games if for no reason other than the fact that it gives players a break. It’s an opportunity to relax a bit without feeling a pressing need to continue the main story or exploring a massive world.

On the whole, the Vinland Saga in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla was a pleasant surprise. It’s an area players didn’t have great expectations for, if they even knew it was going to be in the game at all, but it ended up being a really nice piece of a content that held a bit of importance to the overarching story for the series. Assassin’s Creed 3 isn’t exactly fondly remembered by many fans, but Assassin’s Creed Valhalla found a way to make a nice little callback to it and enhance it, if only by a small amount.
