How Crown Tundra Stops Players From Legendary Pokémon Farming

The number of Legendary Pokémon has increased steadily as different generations of games have been released over the years. Pokémon Sword and Shield has added 15 new Legendary Pokémon to this expanding list with The Crown Tundra DLC. Because the number has become so great, when Legendary Pokémon become available to catch, like with Ultra Wormholes in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, or the Mirage Legends of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the rush to capture the available Legendaries can turn into a repetitive farming experience. The Crown Tundra DLC takes a step away from these older methods of encountering Legendaries, eliminating the need to wander into portals by introducing the Dynamax Adventures.

The addition of Dynamax Adventures to The Crown Tundra reveals a closer look at Pokémon dens, as well as giving players a challenging adventure as they hunt for Legendary Pokémon. To start an adventure, the player selects a Pokémon from a random three provided by the den scientist. The den has a series of three encounters, two other Pokémon ranging in rarity and difficulty, and then the Legendary encounter. All Pokémon have powerful move sets that help them stand apart from overworld encounters. The Pokémon also have a 1 in 300 chance of being shiny at the end of the Dynamax Adventure, when the players is prompted to choose one Pokémon of the potential four they have caught. This shiny chance includes the Legendary caught at the end of the tunnel.

The added content of high shiny rates for all four Pokémon, as well as the rare move sets, could prompt a player to ditch the Legendary at the end of the Adventure in exchange for one of the other Pokémon they found along the way. The Crown Tundra has added Legendary Pokémon from every generation, but there is no rush to get them all right away with the Dynamax Adventures offering so many other rare Pokémon to players. By offering Pokémon just as valuable as a Legendary, players are discouraged from rushing through the encounters and farming all the Legendaries as quickly as possible. Another addition that lends to slowing players comes after an Adventure ends. If the player doesn’t select the Legendary from that encounter, they can record up to three Legendary locations with the den scientist, and can choose to specifically hunt them over other Legendary encounters.

Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Dynamax Adventures Discourage Legendary Farming

Expanding the Legendary hunt doesn’t end with the Dynamax Adventures however, as The Crown Tundra’s Galarian Legendary birds challenge players by roaming the Wild Area and requiring puzzles to engage them. The DLC’s other new Legendaries, like Calyrex and the Regis, are all locked into the storyline, requiring players to slow down and enjoy the puzzles that lead to their capture. By adding so many different methods of finding Legendary Pokémon, the farming methods of the past seem to be obsolete and instead are exchanged for enriching plot and challenging catch mechanics.

The puzzles added by The Crown Tundra storyline, as well as the Dynamax Adventures, create a new way of hunting Legendaries that focus on the exploration and the journey of catching these Pokémon. By focusing on the new mechanics and story, Pokémon Sword and Shield eases away from the desire to crash through catching Legendary Pokémon, potentially making the experience more rewarding for some players. The increased depth of the adventures that players go on to catch these new and returning Pokémon make it less about the prize at the end of the tunnel, and more about the journey to get there.
