How Damien Darhk Can Return For The Flash Armageddon Crossover Event

Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) will return in The Flash’s season 8 crossover event, but the question is how seeing as the sinister warlock died and is in Hell. In lieu of a full-fledged Arrowverse crossover, The Flash will kick off season 8 with a five-part event titled “Armageddon,” which will include Arrowverse guest stars Batwoman (Javicia Leslie), Mia Queen (Katherine McNamara), Black Lightning (Cress Williams), Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), Ryan Choi (Osric Chau), and Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh). In addition to Armageddon’s mystery alien villain, Tom Cavanaugh will also return as Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash.

Introduced in Arrow season 4, Damien Darhk became one of the greatest villains in the Arrowverse. Darhk was an immortal warlock and collector of powerful dark artifacts who was also a member of the League of Assassins and the leader of H.I.V.E. Damien murdered Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) during his reign of terror on Arrow, and he jumped to DC’s Legends of Tomorrow to threaten reality as part of the Legion of Doom with Thawne and Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman). The Legends sent Darhk to Hell at the end of season 3, but Damien, one of history’s greatest villains, returned as an Encore in Legends of Tomorrow season 5, where he attended Nora’s wedding to Ray Palmer. Damien even showed remorse to Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) for killing her sister before he voluntarily banished himself back to Hell to allow Nora a chance at happiness with Ray.

The Flash’s season 8 crossover details are under wraps but Damien’s Arrowverse comeback would, naturally, have to address his return from Hell – unless this will be a version of Damien Darhk either from a different point in the timeline or from another Earth in the Multiverse. Darhk used supernatural means to prolong his life so the Damien in The Flash’s crossover could be a younger, more malevolent version of the dark warlock. Both the Legends and Damien himself have battled Darhk’s evil younger self. Similarly, it could be a Damien Darhk from a different Earth, possibly brought to Earth-Prime by his former Legion of Doom cohort the Reverse-Flash Eobard Thawne, or by whoever the alien villains of “Armageddon” are.

It might even be preferable for an alternate version of Damien Darhk to appear on The Flash, given his emotional and resonant exit from Legends of Tomorrow. Darhk experienced a remarkable character turnaround in his guest spots on Legends; while he is still evil and ruthless, Damien showed he truly loved Nora and he even accepted Ray Palmer as his son-in-law. Damien also revealed himself to be an oddly neurotic father who obsessed over making his daughter happy, though his idea of Nora’s happiness was a life of dark magic and world domination. Ultimately, Darhk accepted that he should be punished for his infinite sins and he chose an eternity of torture in Arrowverse’s Hell post-Crisis, so the supervillain was somewhat redeemed.

The fact that Ray Palmer is also part of The Flash crossover should mean the Atom crosses paths with his father-in-law once again. The absence of Nora is interesting (and a bit disappointing), but it could mean that she is either busy as a Fairy Godmother or Nora and Ray are now parents after they left the Legends and she is staying home while Ray is called to action one more time. If Damien returns from Hell in The Flash, the crossover would be the Darhk-Palmer reunion fans have been waiting for since Legends of Tomorrow season 5. Otherwise, Ray could meet a variant of Damien Darhk who doesn’t know the Atom is his son-in-law on Earth-Prime, which should be entertainingly awkward for both of them.
