How iPhone 13 Series Would Benefit From A Better Ultra Wide Camera

A new iPhone 13 series leak indicates Apple will be upgrading the ultra-wide-angle camera, as well as improving various other components involved in photography. Of course, camera updates are expected with a new iPhone, but it seems every one of the rear cameras may see better specifications, bringing exciting changes to the new models coming later this year.

When discussing cameras, there are plenty of technical terms that some may not be familiar with. Aperture is related to the size of the opening that lets light through to the imaging sensor. Something unintuitive is that a smaller number indicates a larger opening. The focal length is what determines how wide the angle of view is and a smaller number indicates a wider view, while a smaller number shows a narrower view and is usually referred to as telephoto or a zoomed-in view. Imaging pixel size has to do with how much area is devoted to capturing the smallest bit of light in the sensor. A larger pixel can capture more light.

According to MacRumors, Barclays analysts Blayne Curtis and Thomas O’Malley shared an investor note agreeing with earlier rumors that the iPhone 13 series will feature an improved ultra-wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 aperture. Compared with the iPhone 12’s f/2.4 aperture ultra-wide, this would allow much improved low-light photography with less visible noise in the photograph. A wider aperture also results in a reduced depth of field and better natural bokeh when paired with a variable autofocus lens, which is another active rumor, this time from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, again reported by MacRumors. Barclays and Kuo also agree that the next iPhone may bring the 2.5-times telephoto of the iPhone 12 Pro Max to the iPhone 13 Pro. The longer zoom is nice, but since it was 2-times already, it’s a relatively minor improvement and might come with the tradeoff of a smaller f/2.4 aperture, compared to the iPhone 12 Pro’s f/2.2. The focal range increase is not as interesting, if this is the case.

More iPhone 13 Camera Updates

The same report touches on advanced sensor-shift image stabilization coming to the entire iPhone 13 lineup. The possibility of LiDAR on every iPhone 13 was also mentioned, but seems less likely. Thus far, LiDAR has been reserved for the iPad Pro and iPhone Pro models. It seems more likely that Apple would use this to help differentiate the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max from the iPhone 13 and mini. There have also been several suggestions that the entire series could get the larger imaging sensor that was exclusive to the iPhone 12 Pro Max in last year’s release. This means larger pixels and much improved low-light performance. The high price and large size of the iPhone 12 Pro Max limited its audience, but if Apple can bring one or more of its special camera features to the smaller and lower-cost models, it would mean another big year for iPhone sales.

Apple will probably release its new flagship smartphone in the fourth quarter of 2021, based on its usual schedule. Apple is rumored to be keeping the same four-model format as last year, with the 5.4-inch iPhone 13 mini, two 6.1-inch models, an iPhone 13 and an iPhone 13 Pro, with the 6.7-inch iPhone 13 Pro Max topping off the series. The Pro models are expected to be the only two with a telephoto camera, as seen with the current iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. The nice thing about an ultra-wide camera upgrade is that it will benefit all four Apple models, as allowing more light in is critical for better photography.
