How Marvels Midnight Suns Combat Will Showcase Hero Powers

The upcoming Firaxis game Marvel’s Midnight Suns will put a spin on the tactical genre by giving players a hand of cards to control the combat. The cards will be just one way that players can wield superhero powers as they fight off Lilith and her hordes of demons.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns will follow the story of a team of Marvel superheroes who are working to stop Lilith, the mother of demons who is working to end the world and raise her master, Chthon. To do so, the heroes will awaken a human known as the Hunter, who not only has been trained to fight against Lilith, but is also her child. The Hunter is an original character created for the video game and will be the main character that players control, though they’ll be able to interact with other Marvel superheroes and take those heroes into battle at their side. While Marvel’s Midnight Suns features Lilith as the main villain, other classic antagonists like Hydra will also make an appearance.

Although Marvel’s Midnight Suns is from the same team that made the tactical hit XCOM, a new trailer debuted by IGN shows how the combat will be very different from the alien fighting game. For one thing, the combat will be controlled by a random hand of cards dealt to the player. These cards are the first way that Marvel’s Midnight Suns will showcase hero powers, as the cards are unique to each hero and are drawn from their well-known abilities. Nico Minoru, for instance has a card called “Curse” which reflects her magical abilities, while Wolverine’s cards feature abilities like “Beserk” and “Quick Slash,” highlighting his claws and battle rage.

How Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Hero Abilities Interact With the Environment

Firaxis calls Marvel’s Midnight Suns a “cinematic tactical affair,” and clearly wants players to feel like they are taking part in impressive superhero fights. This is demonstrated in the fact that the hero abilities don’t simply do static damage to enemies, but also interact with the environment. While it’s impressive to use a magical whip to slash an enemy, it’s much more impressive to use that whip to sling them off the side of a cliff, or to use blast energy to ignite an oil cannister into a fiery explosion. Players will also be able to unlock different ultimate abilities for their characters by equipping different costumes. These ultimate abilities in Marvel’s Midnight Suns are said to be “battlefield changing,” indicating they are an impressive display of a hero’s power.

There are still more details to come about Marvel’s Midnight Suns, particularly about how things like combos or ultimates will charge or work. This initial trailer, however, seems to want to leave players with the impression that, just because they’re using cards for combat, doesn’t mean the fights themselves won’t be an epic affair.
