Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond has been briefly teased in Respawn’s 10th Anniversary Video dedicated to the studio’s projects of the past decade. This is the first look at the game since September 2019 when it was initially revealed and showcased via developers’ diaries.

As an homage to the original game, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will cover the Western Front of World War II and is expected to release in 2020. The main difference, though, is that the newest game is being developed for virtual reality. More specifically, for the Oculus Rift headset. While the project returns to the original setting of the series, it has tons of novelties to it mostly brought by innovative gameplay solutions for VR. Players will have the opportunity to make the most out of the interactive environment – like distracting German soldiers with an atmospheric song on a gramophone record to shoot them down to the sounds of accompanying soundtrack.

Respawn’s 10th Anniversary Video, posted over on YouTube, briefly highlights some other features of Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. There’s just a couple of short sequences that are easy to miss, especially considering the fact that the video is heavy on the gameplay of other Respawn’s games like Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. As for Medal of Honor, there’s a scene with a player catching grenade mid-air and throwing it back – or picking up a pan and launching it directly in the German soldier’s face. Unfortunately, these sneak-peaks do not include any brand new footage of the upcoming Medal of Honor as all of the above has already been shown in the announcement video. Still, it’s a nice way to remind the fan community of the game’s existence.

It is not quite clear if Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond will ever release outside Oculus Rift on regular platforms as it feels like a natural VR shooter. Moreover, the idea of bringing the once-iconic franchise to a completely new reality does seem like a promising idea to attract modern audiences and shake up old-time fans – much like it happened to Half-Life: Alyx. Back in 2019, EA confirmed that Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond was planned as a high-budget AAA project and was receiving enough attention from the devs. The game is likely to be the current focus for Respawn and its closest release since the studio has recently acknowledged that another anticipated sequel in a popular franchise – Titanfall 3 – was not in development.

Teasing Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond in the anniversary video implies that the game is still scheduled to release this year. The brief showcase will probably serve as the starting point for the upcoming promotional campaign, so it’s a fair assumption that Respawn will share more details in the coming weeks and months. Hopefully, the glorious return of Medal of Honor in VR will pave the way for the proper reincarnation of the franchise on regular platforms.
