August’s Pokémon Presents livestream treated Pokémon fans to an extensive look at Pokémon Legends: Arceus, an upcoming open-world game set in the feudal era of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl’s Sinnoh region, when it was called Hisui. The region differs quite a bit from what players might remember, though, especially given its time period. Here are the biggest differences between the Sinnoh and Hisui regions, at least according to what’s been revealed so far.
The new trailer not only gave fans a good look at what the game’s environments would look like, but also introduced new characters, Pokémon, and gameplay features that have never been seen before in the series. For one, Pokémon Legends: Arceus is now confirmed to feature regional variants of returning Pokémon, although given these don’t appear in Diamond and Pearl it’s likely these variants are extinct by the time the region transforms into what fans know as Sinnoh.
It’s possible, though, that some of Hisui’s new additions could be brought back in the upcoming Sinnoh remakes, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The two games are releasing relatively close together – Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will come out in the fall of 2021 whereas Pokémon Legends: Arceus is currently scheduled for a 2022 release date – perhaps indicating that some of these regional variants and new gameplay mechanics could make a return via fossils and other features.
How The Sinnoh Region Changes In Pokemon Legends: Arceus
The official Pokémon Legends website describes the Hisui region as an area of distinct environments, separated by Mount Coronet, which appears in the center of the region’s map. The mountain can be seen in the Sinnoh region, as well, and in fact shares the same name between both games. Although not all of Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ different environments have been detailed just yet, one has been described as the Obsidian Fieldlands, an area overflowing with vegetation and, in particular, flowers. It’s possible that this could correspond to Floaroma Town as seen in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. The new Pokemon Legends: Arceus trailer also featured a glimpse of quite a few snowy areas, which could represent Snowpoint City.
One other area that’s confirmed to be returning in Pokémon Legends: Arceus is Jubilife City. Within the Hisui region, however, it’s instead known as Jubilife Village. Like its counterpart in the Sinnoh region, it’s a largely commercial area. It also houses the Galaxy Expedition Team, which is dedicated to observing and studying Pokémon and their ways of life. In the Hisui region, Pokémon rarely live in harmony with humans, a vast change from what’s seen in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. As the official release date for Pokémon Legends: Arceus approaches, it’s likely that more story details will be revealed, and in particular there could be a larger focus on just how different the Hisui region is from Sinnoh.
