Instead of once more rebooting the franchise with a different timeline, however, Afterlife serves as a sequel to the original two Ghostbusters films. Ghostbusters: Afterlife follows Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), a young social outcast who, along with her brother Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and their mother Callie (Carrie Coon), move to a small town farmhouse they have inherited from Callie’s recently deceased father. While trying to adjust to her new life, Phoebe discovers she and her family have a special connection to the original Ghostbusters team. All the while, a potentially apocalyptic ghostly threat is hovering over the town, and it’s up to Phoebe and her familyto save the day.
For the most part, Ghostbusters: Afterlife should be suitable for most kids. It’s considerably less scary than the original 1984 film, relying much less on jump scares and freaky ghost designs and taking a lighter, more family-friendly, and comedic approach to its paranormal situations. That said, there are still a few aspects that may upset more sensitive children, so bear that in mind going in. The film opens in a spiritually similar way to the original Ghostbusters movie, with a quick setup for the supernatural threats that will plague the characters. This is possibly Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s most intense scene. Without giving away spoilers, the imagery used in the scene isn’t particularly scary but may upset any children who are sensitive to being scared.
As for other aspects of Ghostbusters: Afterlife that could potentially upset kids, the film’s third act does contain a few creatures that could appear scary, namely iconic Ghostbusters villain Gozer, as well as Gozer’s terror dogs that possess their victims. It’s all mostly cartoony and played for humor, but it is something for parents to keep in mind.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife, at its core, is a family film in the vein of films like Goosebumps or even The Goonies. It’s a film about self-exploration with a wonderful message about forgiveness that should resonate both with children and adults. Filled with plenty of nods to the original films, a great cast of new and old characters, and the iconic Ghostbusters theme song, there’s a lot for kids to really love here, and despite a few intense moments, most children should have no issue seeing this new generation of Ghostbusters with their parents.
