How Scary Is Paranormal Activity 7

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin is the seventh movie in the popular found-footage franchise, but how scary is it, and how many of its frightening moments are jump scares? The latest entry into the Paranormal Activity series follows Margot (Emily Bader), a woman who was abandoned at a hospital as an infant and is now looking to connect with her biological family. She finds a blood relative through a DNA testing website and decides to travel with cameraman Chris (Roland Buck III) and sound tech Dale (Dan Lippert) to her (now deceased) mother’s home to shoot a documentary about her past.

The film, which is part of the franchise that kickstarted the found footage craze, contains one scene reminiscent of a similar moment in 2007’s Rec, a terrifying Spanish found-footage film. Rec follows a woman named Angela as she and her cinematographer attempt to film an evening with a fire department. In Paranormal Activity 7, the trio travel to what they believe is an Amish farmhouse with no cell service, and strange happenings lead the trio to discover something sinister under the family’s religious facade. Similar to Angela, Margot becomes trapped in a community where she is unable to leave or to contact the outside world while running from a malevolent presence and trying to discover what it is and where it came from. The scene in question sees Margot hiding underneath a bed with a night view camera on her face.

Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, released just in time for Halloween, is slow-moving, and the frightening moments throughout the first and second acts are nearly all jump scares that are few and far between. No gore or violence is seen until the final act of the film, and unlike previous Paranormal Activity installments, there’s not much that is paranormal about the first two acts. While it is a found-footage film, the jump scares are highlighted by loud sound cues, which are nearly all non-diegetic. In the final act, the film picks up the pace and the violence, resulting in multiple gory on-screen images and scares, in stark contrast to the mellow nature of the first part of the movie.

The jump scares aren’t as plentiful as in other recent horror films, and nearly all of those in the first two acts, and a few in the third, are in the movie’s trailer. Those with an aversion to James Wan’s jump scare habit will likely be able to tolerate the movie if they made it through the trailer. Unfortunately for others, there are only a few jump scares that are unique to the movie and several of them feel cheap, resulting in multiple scares that seem as though they were added because director William Eubank realized nothing scary had happened in a while. Paranormal Activity 7 also lacks the consistent level of suspense provided by the other entries. Anyone who enjoys being scared consistently and repeatedly will most likely find the film to be too slow, and anyone who goes in expecting the consistent suspense delivered by the first six films will be disappointed by this sequel.

The film is out of place in a franchise that prides itself on paranormal suspense, so audiences looking for plenty of paranormal scares will be unsatisfied. It was released as an attempt to revive the Paranormal Activity franchise but doesn’t deliver on the scary or paranormal elements until two-thirds of the way through. The violence, gore, and suspenseful scares of the final act of Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin come a bit too late, and while frightening, they might end up as a welcome relief to viewers who didn’t realize what they were getting into.
