By showing T’Challa’s Star-Lord going to Morag, Marvel’s What If…? reveals Peter Quill’s Marvel Cinematic Universe weakness. What If…? episode 2 completely changes the MCU by making T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) Star-Lord and leaving Peter Quill (voiced by Brian T. Delaney) on Earth. In the episode, the Ravagers abduct T’Challa from Earth by accident, choosing to keep him as one of their own. T’Challa ends up changing the ways of the Ravagers, making the crime group carry out their schemes and plans for the good of others. T’Challa’s Star-Lord also stops Thanos’ (Josh Brolin) plan to destroy half of all life. Because of T’Challa, Thanos even joins the Ravagers, fighting to spread goodwill throughout the universe.
Peter Quill’s life is also completely different. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Quill (Chris Pratt) becomes an intergalactic outlaw after being taken from Earth. Because of his life in space, he eventually becomes one of the Guardians of the Galaxy, helping to stop Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) from murdering millions with the Power Stone. What If…? episode 2 takes a different approach, showing Quill becoming a Dairy Queen employee instead. With Quill on Earth, his father, Ego the Living Planet (Kurt Russell), finds him at the end of the episode. In the MCU, the Guardians of the Galaxy helped save Quill from Ego, who wants to use his son’s power to help him take over the universe. Unfortunately, in What If…?, Quill doesn’t seem so lucky.
What If…? highlights a specific difference between T’Challa and Quill. Quill has one of the most iconic MCU entrances in Guardians of the Galaxy, arriving on Morag to retrieve the Power Stone while dancing to “Come and Get Your Love.” In What If…?, T’Challa takes a different approach. Instead of listening to ’70s music and goofing off while on a mission to retrieve one of the most powerful items in the universe, T’Challa is all business. He arrives on Morag, gets the Power Stone, and quickly moves on to the next phase of his plan. The scene points out one of Quill’s greatest weaknesses: He’s emotional and a showoff.
Quill’s emotions and bravado constantly get the better of him in the MCU. In Guardians of the Galaxy, Quill’s goofing off delays his trip to get the Power Stone, giving Korath (Djimon Hounsou) and his troops time to surround him. Though Korath also catches up to T’Challa in What If…?, it seems Quill could’ve avoided this by being quicker. Also, in Avengers: Infinity War, Quill’s emotional response after learning of Gamora’s (Zoe Saldana) death allows Thanos to escape from the Avengers. Because of Star-Lord’s Infinity War mistake, Thanos can carry out his deadly finger snap. Time and time again, Quill’s emotions turn out to be a liability.
Though Quill gets a bit too emotional, the supposed weakness also comes in handy. Quill’s emotions and empathy make him a good leader. Because of this quality, the Guardians of the Galaxy stand by his side, helping him defeat Ronan the Accuser and even saving him from Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. T’Challa does things differently. He’s much more focused and to the point. Yes, it saves from some emotional headaches (and Thanos’ universe-destroying catastrophe), but it also makes for a much less iconic character introduction.
