Warning: SPOILERS for Invasion Season 1.

Apple TV+ released Invasion season 1’s final episode on December 10, and the episode set up the questions that will need to be answered in season 2. The show had its ups and downs, especially as it was not so well-received by critics and audience alike, having a Rotten Tomatoes score of 46% from the former and 44% from the latter. Nevertheless, Apple TV+ shared the news that Invasion was renewed for season 2 the day before the finale aired, with the episode itself setting up some existential questions for the future of the show.

Invasion season 1 followed four characters as they grappled with the consequences of a worldwide alien invasion. Aneesha (Golshifteh Farahani) protected her family while evacuating their home near New York, encountering alien life forms relatively early in the show. Trevante Cole (Shamier Anderson), stationed in Afghanistan, fought alien beings with his unit and ended up in London trying to go back to his family. There, he met and helped Caspar (Billy Barratt), a schoolboy who could communicate with the invading aliens through the seizures he often had. Finally, Mitsuki (Shioli Kutsuna) tried to save her astronaut partner after her shuttle ruptured, and in doing so, she realized she could communicate with the aliens through radio waves.

Invasion season 1, episode 10 set up interesting questions regarding its main characters and the all-encompassing alien invasion that will need to be tackled in season 2. Trevante and Mitsuki could be seen choosing a different path from the one they had walked through during most of the season, while Aneesha went from confusingly dealing with all the challenges as they sprouted up to full-survival mode. The invasion itself seemed to stop when the Americans decided to nuke the shuttle Mitsuki was in contact with, but its perceived end was then proved wrong with Invasion season 1’s final scene, where a giant spaceship could be seen seemingly draining water from the ocean.

Invasion season 1 focused more on the personal human reactions to the alien invasion rather than on enormous displays of force against the invaders, as, even when there was one, it was always seen from the central characters and humanity’s point of view. Thus, it would make sense that Invasion season 2 would focus again on Aneesha, Caspar, Trevante, Mitsuki, and the ones closest to them. The implications of an ongoing alien invasion would be even greater for the last two: Trevante had chosen to go back home to his wife and leave his job as a Navy SEAL forever for her, while Mitsuki had fixated on her memories of Hinata (Rinko Kikuchi) for most of Invasion season 1 before letting go of her and leaving her life in Tokyo. Considering their successful encounters with the alien invaders, they both will be probably required to go back to their jobs when everyone realizes the alien threat wasn’t neutralized.

Another major implication of the Invasion season 1 finale concerns the inner workings of the alien invaders and their purpose. The US official that debriefed Trevante before letting him leave London suggested the aliens’ plan was terraforming and emitting gas into the atmosphere. Still, it would remain unexplained what they would need ocean water for. At the same time, how they behaved as if they were exactly the same, along with the fact that Caspar seemed to die when they stopped, but was found alive in a dream-like state probably interfacing with them, suggested a hive mind drove the alien invaders, and Caspar was now part of it. Considering these discoveries, Invasion season 1 sets up a few intriguing storylines that will probably be examined in the future, making Invasion season 2 look particularly promising.
