The second and final expansion for Gunfire Game’s Remnant: From The Ashes is here, and it’s the perfect epilogue to a game I happily described as a masterpiece when it released exactly 1 year ago. Subject 2923 adds a significant campaign equal to about half of the base game’s story, as well as dozens of new weapons, mods, trinkets, and armor sets to discover. Most importantly, Subject 2923 brings players to a new world, Reisum, and introduces new enemy types, dungeons, bosses, and puzzles to solve. It’s a massive expansion that adds a ton of value to survival mode, the rogue-like game mode introduced in the previous expansion. Subject 2923 is the perfect send-off for Remnant and a must-have expansion.

Exploring New Worlds

The new campaign essentially plays out in 3 acts: There’s a new Earth zone, a trip to Ward Prime, and an adventure through the new snow-covered world called Reisum. Right off the bat, there’s a significant improvement in production value observable in these new worlds. The foggy, haunted forest where the game begins is incredibly atmospheric and makes use of the space in a way that really surprised me. I like the worlds in the original game and I think they all have strong, unique identities, but the new zones show that the developers really stepped up their game with this expansion.

I must admit though that I found the journey through Ward Prime to be a bit of chore. Throughout the entire chapter, you’ll be teleporting between realities where you’ll be hunted by unkillable monsters. You’ll need to find a certain type of root-covered door and destroy it before the monsters find you, instantly teleporting back to the safe reality when doing so. With more than 1 player, the entire thing is completely trivial because 1 person can teleport you while the other attacks the root. It’s more challenging when playing by yourself, but it’s incredibly repetitive. Sometimes there are multiple doors that need to be cleared and, because you teleport back everything you destroy one, you’ll have to run back and forth to clear them all. I found the entire chapter incredibly tedious.

Luckily, once you get through Ward Prime you’ll get to explore the new ice world Reisum and experience all the fantastic new enemies, bosses, and dungeons the expansion has to offer. I believe there are 5 new bosses (though there could be ones I haven’t discovered, which is part of the beauty of Remnant) and all of them feel tough-but-fair in a way that the Swamps Of Corsus bosses did not. There really only 2 new types of dungeons, but they are very different and both are really fun to explore.

Bulking Up The Build Options

Just like Swamps of Corsus, Subject 2923 does a great job building out some of the underserved archetypes. While Corsus did a lot to make melee builds more viable, Subject 2923 adds a lot of options for bleed. One of my favorite builds uses a ring that gives lifesteal on bleed and an amulet that increases ranged damage to bleeding targets. These items open up opportunities to use weapons that I’d previously overlooked, like the multi-shot crossbow called Devastator.

The big new archetype for new elemental damage type that applies Frostbite, a cold effect that slows enemies. It’s a fantastic status that can give you a lot of breathing room when fighting elites, and there are tons of new weapons and mods to try out that deal cold damage. There’s also new trinkets and traits that enhance or protect you from elemental damage, and just an overall emphasis on the strength of all types of elemental damage. The additions in Subject 2923 round out the build options with just about everything you can think of and I feel pretty confident that the new loot pool completes Remnant in a really satisfying way.

Maximum Replayability

In Adventure Mode, players now have access to Reisum for finding new items and grinding upgrade materials. There isn’t a way to replay the new Earth zone or Ward Prime without replaying the story, which is kind of a bummer because there’s at least 1 weapon and trait you can miss in the story, and the only way to get them is to replay it.

The real replayability comes from Survival Mode. I was hot in Survival when Swamps of Corsus game out, and it’s even better now with all the new loot, dungeons, and bosses that come with the new expansion. I still feel that the bosses introduced in Swamps are overturned, but the new loot pool provides better options for dealing with them while the new dungeons help dilute the available levels so that the Swamps bosses come up less often. I’m still having fun leveling up new gear and experimenting with different build options, but Survival is what will keep me coming back to Remnant for the long haul and now, it’s better than ever.

Remnant: From The Ashes is now available as a complete edition on PC, PS4, and Xbox One for $49.99. Some call it “Dark Souls with guns,” but I think it’s outgrown the comparison and become genre-defining success that others will surely emulate down the line. Subject 2923 is essential to the experience and a satisfying conclusion to an already fantastic game.

A PC code was provided to TheGamer for this review. Subject 2923 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One for $9.99.
