How To Build Cloud Strife In Dungeons & Dragons

There are a lot of people who are curious about trying Dungeons & Dragons for the first time, but they don’t have a set character in mind for their first game. It’s possible that when the player joins a group, they need to take on a specific character class in order to fill a required role in the party. As such, these players might want to create a character based on a fictional person that they like, and Cloud Strife would be a popular choice. Cloud Strife has fronted the most iconic JRPG of all time and he recently returned to prominence as the main character of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The Final Fantasy series has switched between using character class systems (usually referred to as jobs) with games using preset classes and abilities or skill point systems. Final Fantasy VII was originally planned to have character classes for all of the main party members, but this idea was scrapped over time. Cloud Strife was originally referred to as a Mystic Knight, which is a class/job that mixes melee combat with magical spells. This description fits Cloud well, as the Materia system in Final Fantasy VII acts as a substitute for character classes, with each character able to equip and combine numerous abilities in order to customize their role in the party.

The version of Cloud that we have created is based solely on material from the Player’s Handbook. The Mystic Knight class allows us to easily determine several aspects of a D&D version of Cloud Strife. Cloud is a human (non-variant) who belongs to the fighter class and he would take on the Eldritch Knight archetype when he hits level three. As a spellcasting fighter, Cloud’s stats would need to be spread among his physical attributes and the Intelligence stat. Using the basic stat spread from page 13 of the Player’s Handbook and taking his race into account, Cloud’s base stats would be STR 16, DEX 13, CON 14, INT 15, WIS 9, CHA 11. A DM who is willing to accommodate the player might be willing to switch the Eldritch Knight’s spellcasting stat to Charisma (switching it with Intelligence), in order to reflect the fact that Cloud is the party leader and has women falling for him all throughout the story. This would switch INT to 11 and CHA to 15.

Cloud’s initial Fighting Style would be Protection (to mimic the effects of the Cover Materia, which he was commonly given by players). Assuming that the player is allowed to use the Feat rules, Cloud would take Charger at level 4 (to mimic Braver), Great Weapon Master at 6, Sentinel at 8, and Savage Attacker at 12.

Once Cloud reaches level three, he will start gaining access to spells, but he only has access to Abjuration and Evocation spells from the wizard list. However, they can choose three spells from different schools at level 8, level 14, and level 20. The first Cantrips he would pick are blade ward and fire bolt first, with true strike at level 10 (Cantrips are exempt from the school restrictions). As an Eldritch Knight, Cloud would only gain access to a few spells over the course of his career, maxing out with level four spells. Cloud’s spell list would include things like absorb elements, thunderwave, magic missile, burning hands, Melf’s acid arrow, darkness, protection from energy, lightning bolt, fireball, ice storm, magic weapon, haste, slow, confusion, conjure minor elementals, and wall of fire.

Cloud’s background is easy, as he would be a Soldier (or SOLDIER, if you will). Along with his class skills, he would possess Animal Handling (for his chocobo breeding/riding skills), Athletics, Intimidation, and Perception. In terms of equipment, he would have half-plate, a greatsword (his Buster Sword), an explorer’s pack, and a set of fine clothing (his pretty dress & wig from the Wall Market section of the game).



In terms of alignment, Cloud would change over the course of the story. Cloud starts out as a mercenary, putting him in the Lawful Neutral category. Over time, his perspective changes and he gradually opens up to his party members and their cause, leading to him becoming Chaotic Good. Cloud has no problem working for the benefit of the greater good, but like the other members of AVALANCHE, he was willing to go to extremes in order to accomplish his goals.

A lot of Cloud’s personality in Final Fantasy VII is linked to his past trauma and his memories being tampered with. It’s up to the player and the DM to determine how this would fit into the campaign, as some might be fine with a character whose abilities match those of Cloud, but are free to develop his personality in a different story. It’s unlikely that the average D&D world has an equivalent to the Shinra Corporation (except for maybe Eberron), so a version of Cloud Strife that is separated from Sephiroth and Hojo would be a very different man.
