How to Find (& Catch) Excadrill in Pokémon Sword & Shield

The Lake of Outrage, Giant’s Mirror, and Giant’s Cap in Pokémon Sword & Shield are all teeming with Pokémon, especially those that could be considered rare or fan favorites. Excadrill, a mole-like Pokémon, is not the rarest species but is one of the stronger utility Pokémon in the game. Players can find Excadrill and its pre-evolution counterpart, Drilbur, in several of these areas.

Excadrill is a Ground and Steel-type Pokémon that can either be encountered in the wild or evolved after catching Drilbur. Though players can catch Drilbur from a lower level, Drilbur spawns more rarely than Excadrill will. For players who need some support clearing out entry hazards, or for those just looking to complete their Pokédex, here’s how to find and catch (or evolve) Excadrill in Pokémon Sword & Shield.

Find Excadrill in Pokémon Sword & Shield

How to Find (& Catch) Excadrill in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Excadrill are available exclusively in the Overworld and only spawn under certain weather conditions. The highest chance of finding Excadrill is at Giant’s Mirror in Sandstorms, Snowstorms, Snow, or Intense Sun, once players have reached Level 31-34. Under each of these conditions, Excadrill has a 60% chance of spawning.

Players can also find Excadrill in a few other locations and under a few other weather conditions. These are:

  • Lake of Outrage: During Sandstorms at Level 55-58 (35% chance)
  • Giant’s Mirror: At Level 31-34, in Normal Weather, or when it is Overcast, Heavy Fog, or Raining (30% chance)
  • Giant’s Cap: Wandering here during Intense Sun or Sandstorms

If players want to simply evolve Excadrill from Drilbur instead, they will have the best chance of doing so at either Giant’s Mirror during a Sandstorm at Level 28-30 or in the Dusty Bowl during a Sandstorm at Level 42-47. Other places Drilbur is found, though less often, are the Galar Mine, Motostoke Outskirts, Stony Wilderness, Hammerlocke Hills, and Giant’s Cap.

Catch Excadrill in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Excadrill is a Ground and Steel-type Pokémon, so it is weak to Fighting, Ground, Fire, and Water Pokémon. Players should use one of these to weaken Excadrill and catch it quickly. Players will want to avoid attacking with Poison or Electric-type Pokémon, as Excadrill is immune to those attacks.

If players are looking to evolve Excadrill instead, they will need to level up Drilbur to Level 31. Depending on the location where the player found a Drilbur, it may already be at the appropriate level. In this case, if the evolution does not immediately trigger, players should level Drilbur up by one level using EXP Candy. At this point, Drilbur will become Excadrill. To level up more quickly, in addition to EXP Candy, players can add Drilbur to the party for battles, engage in training, and show it affection and friendship.
