Since Pokémon GO launched in 2016, there has been no specific timing as to when types of Pokémon change over. It’s mostly been randomized every few months, usually because of an event. However, Niantic is now introducing a tell-tale way of determining which Pokémon will be available at any given time: Seasons.
As the world outside rotates through winter, spring, summer and autumn, the world of Pokémon GO will change in real time. Every three months, players can expect to see a new season in Pokémon GO that brings major changes, including types of Pokémon and their likelihood of being caught in the wild.
Seasons will kick in with the GO Beyond update on Nov. 30, so players in the Northern Hemisphere will begin the first official season of the game on Dec. 1. They can expect to see Pokémon that can withstand winter in the wild, while summer Pokémon — like Burmy, Darumaka and others — will appear in the Southern Hemisphere. Different Deerling forms will appear based on the player’s hemisphere, as well.
In addition, in-game events will be themed around seasons and additional changes to overall gameplay will occur in conjunction with this restructuring. In each new season, certain Mega-Evolved Pokémon — which joined the game in September — will appear in seasonal Raids. Some will have limited periods of increased total CP and Trainers will have more opportunities to use their Mega-Evolved Pokémon, as well.
The introduction of seasons in Pokémon GO also brings exciting changes to the GO Battle League, which will expand from 10 to 24 ranks, with the top four getting all new names and corresponding badges. The expanded ranks will be accompanied by a totally new reward structure, which gives Trainers more opportunities to earn exclusive rewards through ranking up.
Players can also expect GO Battle League rewards to be tied to the theme of the current season. GO Battle League seasons will occur in tandem with the overarching seasons and will rotate formats on the same three-month schedule. Players unfamiliar with Go Battle Leagues might need to brush up, as they could be one of the requirements to reach higher levels in the new level-up structure.
The first Pokémon GO season, the Season of Celebration, will begin Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 8 a.m. local time. Pokémon originally discovered in the Kalos region will begin to appear in Pokémon GO, so to celebrate their arrival and the new year, Professor Willow will embark on a quest to research the different regions of the Pokémon world and needs Trainers’ help.
During this season, Trainers will be able to participate in a series of in-game events. Pokémon originally discovered in the Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos regions will appear as Professor Willow works to discover and celebrate their rich histories.
At the end of the Season of Celebration, Niantic will introduce a new global event experience for Pokémon GO players. Seasons will change up gameplay in a good way and offer players more incentive to log on and play throughout the year, beyond just playing events or Community Days.
