How to Find (& Catch) Shiny Ninetails in Pokémon Sword & Shield

Ninetails is a powerful Pokemon that reigns from the Kanto region and has made an appearance in Pokemon Sword & Shield. This guide will help players find their Shiny variation in the game. With only 400 Pokemon available in Pokemon Sword & Shield (not including Pokemon that have been included through the DLC), the amount of potential Shiny Pokemon is fairly small. Especially if a trainer wants at least one Shiny Pokemon from each Pokemon family tree, Shiny hunting all of these creatures has never been easier. Shiny Pokemon are strangely colored variants of specific Pokemon. Pokemon like Pikachu change its fur into a more bright orange when compared to its original yellow design. Here’s how players can find their very own Shiny Ninetails in Pokemon Sword & Shield.

There are a few things players need to accomplish when Shiny hunting Pokemon. These range from understanding the methods of how Shiny hunting works and what items will increase their chances of locating one, regardless of its through the breeding or the battling. While it isn’t necessary, these are here to make it much easier to encounter these elusive Shiny creatures.

  • The Oval Charm: Makes it easier for eggs to appear while a Pokemon is in the Day Care. The player must be the Champion. Head to Circhester and enter the building right next to the Pokemon Center. Inside will be a trainer who will only battle the player after they become champion. Defeat him, and he will award the player with the Oval Charm.
  • Flame Body: Makes eggs hatch faster. There’s currently 7 Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield with this ability. Those Pokemon are Litwick, Lampent, Chandelure, Carkol, Coalossal, Sizzilipede, and Centiscorch. Carkol is the easiest to get in this group, as players can find them spawning in the Galar Mine. Once players have a Carkol with Flame Body, eggs will hatch much faster.
  • Regional Ditto: Increases the chance of running into a Shiny egg. To obtain one of these, the player will likely have to trade with a trainer from another region. If the player has Pokemon Home, they can search for one using the GTS. Breeding with this Ditto and another Pokemon will increase the odds of the egg being shiny.
  • Shiny Charm: This item brings the odds from 1/4096 to 1/1365.33. To get this item, the player will need to have completed their Pokedex in the game, meaning capturing and registering all 400 Pokemon in the game. After doing this, head over to Circhster and enter the building with the flags on the outside. Go in the elevator and head to the room on the far left. Speak with the doctor in this room and he will give the player the Shiny Charm.

Once the player has all of these, now it’s just a game of chance. Here’s how players can find a Shiny Ninetails.

How To Get A Shiny Ninetails in Pokemon Sword & Shield

Fortunately, the best way to go about finding a Shiny Ninetails is to first find a Shiny Vulpix and evolve it with a Fire-Stone. Make sure to place the Regional Ditto with a Vulpix or a Ninetails within the Day Care Center. Eventually, after moving around a bit, the Day Care Lady will provide the player with an egg. Make sure to have a Pokemon with the ability Flame Body at the front of the party, as this will make the required steps for the egg to hatch shrink by half. Keep on collecting eggs from the Day Care Lady and hatching them. The Oval Charm increases the frequency in which eggs will appear in the Day Care Center, providing the player with dozens of eggs every few minutes. This can be a time-consuming process, as there is no definitive way to hatch a Shiny Pokemon. This method is just the easiest way to cut down on time. It can take 10 eggs or it can take 10,000 eggs. It’s all a matter of chance.

Alternatively, trainers can also increase their chances of running into a Shiny Pokemon by continuously battling that specific Pokemon species. The game keeps track of the amount of Pokemon the player has battled. If the player repeatedly defeats this specific Pokemon, the odds of it coming out shiny will increase. All the player has to do is encounter it in the wild and beat it in battle. Players have a 60% chance of encountering a Vulpix in the Rolling Fields during Sunny Weather, making Vulpix spawn fairly often. Continue to battle these Vulpix until the player is able to encounter a Shiny version of it. Capture it and use a Fire Stone to bring it to its final form with a Shiny Ninetails. Although, players can also just encounter a Ninetails in the Lake of Outrage during Sunny Weather. Ninetails will only appear 25% of the time but the Lake of Outrage is a much smaller location, making it so Pokemon cycle in and out fairly frequently. The change the weather in the game, the player can change the date from inside their Nintendo Switch settings. Also, players can hunt for the Alolan version of Vulpix by doing the breeding method.

Shiny Ninetails is a beautiful, icy white color, similar to its Alolan form. Pokemon Sword & Shield introduced plenty of older Pokemon through the expansion pass. The expansion pass is broken up into two different halves, the Isle of Armor (which is available now), and the Crown Tundra (which is scheduled to release later this Fall). Both included a grand total of 200+ older Pokemon from previous generations as well as new story elements for the player to enjoy. This marks the first time in series history where a mainline title has received paid DLC. This is likely the way the Pokemon Company is going to release new content to players rather than releasing a third definitive version like they normally do. Pokemon Sword & Shield was met with much controversy for not including every Pokemon in its game, unlike previous titles that allowed players to transfer older Pokemon from previous generations with no charge at all. Although, the company is releasing all of these old creatures for free along with the release of the expansion pass. Pokemon Sword & Shield is one of the best-selling Nintendo Switch titles yet.
