How To Get Meltan Into Pokémon Sword & Shield

Meltan is strange, even by Pokémon standards. It was the first Pokémon to be revealed in Pokémon GO instead of being announced for the main games. It technically belongs to Gen VII despite not appearing in the Alola games. Even now, it can only be caught by linking Pokémon GO to Pokémon Let’s Go, Pikachu and Eevee. That makes Meltan a pretty rare find unless you’re the type who needs to play every Pokémon game. Adding it to your Sword or Shield team won’t be an easy task, but we’re here to help you figure it out.

Catch Meltan In Pokémon GO

How To Get Meltan Into Pokémon Sword & Shield

Meltan is considered a “mythical” Pokémon, which means it never appears in the wild. Like Mew and Celebi before it, trainers will have to fulfill special conditions to get Meltan. The special conditions for Meltan involve connecting Pokémon GO to Pokémon Let’s Go via bluetooth.

Before this, however, players have to have reached Fuschia City in Pokémon Let’s Go. They then have to go to the Go Park, the northernmost building where the Safari Zone was in Red/Blue/Yellow. Once the Go Park is unlocked, players can follow the instructions in Let’s Go’s options menu to set up a bluetooth connection with their Pokémon GO-playing phone.

Players will need to send at least one Pokémon (doesn’t matter what) from GO to Let’s Go. This is a one-way trip, so don’t send a vital part of your Pokémon GO PvP team. Doing this will give them an item called the Mystery Box in GO. When activated, the Mystery Box will make Meltan spawn around the player much like an Incense. The Mystery Box can be reactivated every seven days by sending another Pokémon to Let’s Go.

Transfer Meltan To Pokémon Home

Since Meltan can only be caught with the Mystery Box in Pokémon GO, players will need to make several transfers to get it to the world of Sword/Shield. The first transfer is from GO to Let’s Go. As mentioned above, players can use bluetooth to send Pokémon from the mobile game to the Switch. Meltan is eligible for this transfer.

From there, players can connect Let’s Go to Pokémon Home. All it takes is a good internet connection to send Meltan from Let’s Go to Home’s cloud-based storage. Similarly, Home seamlessly links to Sword/Shield. Open the Home app on your Switch to transfer Meltan into Galar.

Trade With A Friend

The above transfer methods all assume that you’re very invested in Pokémon. At least enough to actively play Pokémon GO or buy the non-essential Let’s Go games. If that doesn’t describe you, then you’ll have to trade with a friend that has Meltan to spare.

There is one important thing to note about trading – Meltan cannot be traded through Pokémon Home’s GTS. You have to friend the other party and set up a more personal trade. Or trade for it in Pokemon GO and then transfer it to your Switch.

Meltan’s Evolutions

Another unique aspect of Meltan is that it only evolves in Pokémon GO. It will become Melmetal after being fed 400 candies. That means that in order to have Melmetal in Home or Sword/Shield, you have to evolve before transferring or trade for it.

Melmetal has a Gigantamax form in Sword/Shield, but there is no official way to achieve it yet.

What Melmetal Does In Battle

Melmetal’s one Ability is Iron Fist, which raises the power of its punching moves. This makes it easy to decide what moves to give it. Ice Punch and Thunder Punch are great. It also has its own signature move, Double Iron Bash. It does great Steel-type damage and carries some useful secondary effects. Gigantamax Melmetal will most certainly be a terror once it’s made available.
