There have been many changes made to the overall Pokemon gameplay formula over the past two decades, with battle mechanics being altered and new Pokemon typings being added into the mix. There have also been some changes to how a Pokemon’s friendship/happiness levels can impact a Pokemon battle, and some Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players might want to know how it all works.
When a trainer is in the midst of a battle with their believed team of Pokemon, there will be times when text will appear that will give Pokemon some personality during battle, all depending on their happiness levels. Flavor text such as “X Pokemon is a little nervous,” or “X Pokemon is dozing off.” There are even moments when a Pokemon will look back at their trainer or perhaps do a little hop or two to show off how much they adore their trainer. While most of this is just for fun, having a Pokemon’s happiness levels can still improve its performance in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl battles.
What It Means When a Pokemon is Dozing Off During Battle
If text appears during battle saying that a player’s Pokemon is dozing off shouldn’t worry about it at all. When text like that pops up, it basically means that that Pokemon’s friendship is very high and it really likes its trainer currently. The Pokemon won’t actually fall asleep during battle, it’s flavor text to give Pokemon a little bit of personality during battles.
Once a Pokemon’s friendship/happiness levels reach a certain amount, the Pokemon will eventually start to perform special random actions in battle, like automatically dodging enemy attacks, staying alive at 1 HP, and getting more critical hits. Needless to say, players should ensure that their team of Pokemon is as happy as can be. It can certainly help trainers defeat the Elite Four and the champion, Cynthia.
How to Check Friendship Levels in Pokemon BDSP
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players can acquire the Friendship Checker Poketch app by going to the Pokemon Center located in Eterna City. Speak to the woman in the middle of the room and she will give players the application. If players hold the A button over the Pokemon while using the app, hearts will come out. The more hearts that the Pokemon has, the happier it is. Players can use this to see how close they are to potentially evolving a Pokemon or to just see how a Pokemon feels towards its trainer.
