Character customization is a crucial element for role-playing games, especially for online gameplay, as players strive to create a character — or many — in the image of their unique personality. This is why many players were put off when they realized they could only make one character at a time in Red Dead Online.
Most online RPGs allow you to create several characters. This enables players to switch classes (or roles, in the case of RDO) on a whim and conveniently gather and trade resources between their characters. Unfortunately, Red Dead’s one-character limit negates this option, and it also means you’ll want to be extra finicky when creating your character the first time around.
If you weren’t aware of this limitation, don’t worry, you weren’t the only one. If you rushed through the initial character creation to get to the gameplay and aren’t happy with some of your choices, there is still an option to create a new character, though it may come with a few sacrifices.
How To Create a New Character In Red Dead Online
Changing Your Character’s Appearance Vs. Making a New Character
If you were simply looking to change your character’s appearance, there is a way to do that without deleting your current character, and the first time is free. By doing this, you can alter nearly everything about your character, aside from their gender, without having to restart the game. We’d recommend starting there and then seeing how you feel before wiping your progress and making an entirely new character.
Changing your appearance allows you re-customize your character with everything you can typically have done at the barbershop. Plus, you’ll be able to reconfigure your character’s heritage, eye color, facial features, and bone structure. You won’t be able to switch up their whistle style or undergo a gender swap, though.
By restarting the game, you will be able to redesign your entire character, gender and whistle included. However, you’ll be forfeiting any progress you have made in the game. This includes any ranks you have earned.
Deleting Your Character & Starting Over in RDO
By making a new character, you are committing to restarting the game, and consequently, as stated above, all progress will be lost. The only exception currently is the gold and cash you earn will carry over to a new character. If that is what you’re looking for, here’s how to reset your progress and get to creating a new character in Red Dead Online.
Go to the game menu where you access the player tab. On the player screen, select your character’s portrait and then check the bottom right corner of the page for a “delete character” option.
And the process is as simple as that. From there, you will be able to create a new character and restart your western adventures in Red Dead Online.
