Seth Green, the actor responsible for Howard the Duck’s voice in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 has revealed he took inspiration from Danny Devito. Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy released in 2014 and introduced the world to the oddball team of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot. Even though it’s based off one of Marvel’s lesser known properties, Guardians was a smash hit, earning a sequel and its characters roles in other MCU films, like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

As one of the MCU’s more eccentric films to date, Guardians of the Galaxy includes its share of strange characters even beyond its core lineup. There are the many alien prisoners and guards seen in the Kyln, and the creatures seen in The Collector’s collection. In fact, The Collector himself is a pretty odd character. Among the creatures in his collection, however, is perhaps one of Marvel’s weirdest characters – Howard the Duck. He only appears briefly during the film’s post-credit scene, but his small role in Guardians of the Galaxy was a fun surprise all the same. Now, the actor who gave his voice to the talking duck is explaining how he approached the role.

In an interview with Comic Book Movie, Seth Green discussed how he settled on the voice he uses for Howard the Duck during the character’s Guardians of the Galaxy cameo, citing Danny Devito as his source of inspiration.

James Gunn and I just talked about it a little bit and he said he saw him as kind of a Danny DeVito – we always imagined him being sort of a gruff and cynical sarcastic character. Howard doesn’t know what the Earth species of duck even is and doesn’t think of himself that way and is offended by that generalization.

Howard the Duck debuted in Marvel Comics in 1973, appearing in mostly parody stories where he’d poke fun at your genre tropes. Being that he’s an anthropomorphized talking duck, it’s explained that Howard comes from another dimension, arriving on our Earth following a shift of the “Cosmic Axis”. Though not a traditional comic book hero, he did land a movie well before most of Marvel’s superheroes with the 1986 release of Howard the Duck. The film was a colossal failure, but it did little to tarnish the character’s reputation. Howard continued appearing in comics, and in 2014, he had his highest profile gig since the 1986 flop with the cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Learning that Green used Devito as his inspiration for crafting Howard’s voice makes perfect sense. Like so many of Devito’s characters, whether it’s his breakout role as Louie De Palma on Taxi or a more recent role like Frank Reynolds from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Howard is sarcastic and a little cantankerous, but that’s all part of his appeal. Any future plans for Howard the Duck in the MCU are unknown, but seeing how well the character’s inclusion has been received – even appearing again in the climactic battle of Endgame – there’s a good chance Green will be asked to return as Howard the Duck someday. Perhaps it’ll be for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, perhaps another MCU movie. There had been a Howard the Duck cartoon in the works for Hulu from Kevin Smith, but that project has since been cancelled. In which case, fans hoping to see more of Howard the Duck on screen will need to hold out hope the MCU isn’t finished with him (or Green) just yet.
