Harrison Ford characters Han Solo and Indiana Jones are equally iconic, but the latter’s adventures contain an Easter egg reference to the former. Even the most successful Hollywood actors are lucky to end up playing a character so beloved and appreciated that they become a true touchstone in popular culture. While doing so can also sometimes lead to unfortunate type casting issues from then on, it’s still a real honor. In Ford’s case, he accomplished this feat not once, but twice.

To be clear, Ford has played quite a few memorable characters over the course of his long career, but Star Wars’ roguish smuggler turned freedom fighter Han Solo and treasure-hunting hero Indiana Jones are clearly a cut above the rest. Han Solo and Indiana Jones are so famous that even those who’ve never seen the movies they appear in no full well who they are and what they do, although it’s obviously becoming harder and harder to find anyone who hasn’t seen the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises.

Ford hasn’t even let advancing age get in the way of continually reprising his two biggest characters either, appearing as Han to some extent in all three of Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy, and currently being set to star in 2022’s planned Indiana Jones 5. While Han and Indy don’t at first seem like characters with much potential for crossover onscreen, there is at least a subtle connection between them, thanks to a sly movie Easter egg.

In the Star Wars films, Han Solo is of course a renowned pilot, and captain of the Millennium Falcon. While Indiana Jones isn’t a pilot by trade, he does manage to get into several dangerous situations involving aircraft. In Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indy finds himself trying to successfully land a cargo plane from which the actual pilots have parachuted out and drained all the fuel. Needless to say, things don’t end smoothly, but Indy and company do manage to survive. At one point though, when the plane engine fails, a rather distinctive sound effect can be heard.

Those with a great memory and sharp hearing will notice that this exact same sound effect was used when the Millennium Falcon stalls while Han is trying to get it to reach light speed and make a hyperspace jump in The Empire Strikes Back. It’s a fun little tie between the two films and iconic Ford characters, and the sound itself is based on a real 1920s plane engine, making it especially appropriate for the relative time period of the Indiana Jones films. The sound effect has also appeared in a few other Lucasfilm projects.
