It’s almost 2020, but most people’s obsession with the ’90s sitcom Friends isn’t stopping anytime soon. Many believe that Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) and Monica Geller (Courteney Cox) are the ultimate in #friendshipgoals and that they couldn’t possibly be any closer. After all, they’re navigating their NYC lives together as roommates and pals, and they seem to spend the majority of their time together.

But if fans look a bit more closely at this TV relationship, they might realize that there are some problems with this friendship. Here are 10 reasons why Monica and Rachel aren’t real friends.

10 They’re Both Selfish At Times

Just like the characters on Seinfeld, it can sometimes be hard to really love the gang on Friends. Yes, they’re charming and hilarious and they care about each other…but they can all be pretty selfish at times.

Because Monica and Rachel are both fairly self-centered and can really focus on their own personal problems without thinking about other people, that suggests that they aren’t actually real friends. If they were, they could forget about whatever’s going on with themselves and help the other one out, but Monica is often caught up with cooking the perfect meal and Rachel is bummed out about her crappy love life and lack of career.

9 Monica Doesn’t Fix Ross And Rachel’s Relationship

When watching Friends, it really feels like Monica has no interest in Ross and Rachel being a couple. She doesn’t seem to try hard enough to fix their broken romance, especially about that whole “we were on a break” thing.

Sure, it could be argued that Ross and Rachel had to have tons of tension or their love story wouldn’t be compelling enough, since all good drama needs conflict. But it still seems like Monica could be more supportive.

8 Monica Hides Her Relationship With Chandler From Rachel

The truth is that best friends tell each other absolutely everything. That’s the whole point of having a BFF, right? When you start dating someone and you’re serious about them, your good friend is going to be the first person that you tell. It’s fun to share this big moment with them, and they’re going to be so happy for you.

That’s why it’s really strange that when Monica and Chandler start dating, they do so secretly, and Monica doesn’t even tell Rachel first. Instead, Rachel hears them on the phone, and then Phoebe knows, and then all of the characters do in Season 5’s “The One Where Everybody Finds Out.” This seems incredibly unrealistic, and it’s hard to believe that Monica and Rachel are real friends because of this.

7 They Weren’t Friends For A Long Time

While friendships come and go throughout your life, real friends stick together through bad and good times. That’s why it’s weird that in the pilot of Friends, Monica and Rachel are starting to get friendly again after not hanging out for a really long time.

Fans know that they were pals in the past, but they had a gap in their friendship, and that doesn’t make any sense. If they were so close, they would have done their best to keep the friendship going, even when Rachel was getting married and Monica was aspiring to become a chef.

6 Monica Should Stop Ross And Emily’s Wedding

It’s devastating for fans when the gang on Friends goes to London for Ross and Emily’s wedding. While there are definitely people who don’t think that Ross and Rachel should be together, it’s fair to say that a lot more people think that they’re total soulmates.

So shouldn’t Monica stop Ross from going ahead with the wedding? Shouldn’t she want to make it her mission to convince him that he loves Rachel and he’s not supposed to be with Emily? It seems like a true pal would do that. Making matters even worse is the fact that, in Season 4’s “The One With All The Wedding Dresses,” Monica goes to get Emily’s wedding dress. What?!

5 It Always Seems Like It’s Monica’s Way Or The Highway

A friendship is a two-way street — but that’s not really how it goes in Monica’s world.

In the sixth episode of Season 1, “The One With The Butt,” Rachel figures out that Monica is the neat freak that every Friends fan knows her to be. Monica gets really mad that Rachel switches some stuff around in the living area of their apartment. It’s not fair of Monica to let Rachel move in with her and then act like it’s solely her apartment, end of story. This is just one example of how bossy Monica can be and how she doesn’t often think of someone else’s wants and feelings.

4 Rachel Tells Phoebe That She’s Pregnant First

In the Season 8 episode “The One After ‘I Do,'” Rachel tells Phoebe that she’s pregnant…but why doesn’t she tell Monica her secret?

This is super confusing and another reason that Rachel and Monica aren’t real friends. If they were actually close friends who were always there for each other, Rachel would feel totally comfortable telling her anything… yes, even though Monica just got married. It’s okay to talk about important things even if the timing isn’t perfect because that’s real life.

3 Rachel Actually Believes Chandler Would Cheat On Monica

Anyone who has seen even a few episodes of Friends knows that Monica and Chandler have a great love story. And everyone knows that he really cares about her. It’s a huge deal, since Chandler starts developing as a person and while he’s still pretty silly, he tries to act like an adult and let go of some of his immaturity.

When Rachel believes that Chandler is cheating on Monica and then learns that he was talking to a woman he wants to buy a house from, it’s pretty confusing. If she and Monica were real friends, she would understand that Chandler and Monica have a solid relationship and that he would never do that. This feels like a huge betrayal.

2 They Get Too Envious Of Each Other

When your best friend gets engaged, it’s kind of like you did too, because you share their excitement and you want to be involved in every single detail of their wedding planning.

Well, when Monica and Chandler decide to get married, Rachel and Monica view it as an opportunity to become green-eyed monsters about each other. In the Season 7 episode “The One With Monica’s Thunder,” Monica wants to have a party to bask in the glory of her engagement. What happens instead? She accidentally spots Rachel and Ross making out so she gets mad. She expected it to be all about her. This makes zero sense because why can’t both her engagement and Ross and Rachel’s love be true at the same time?

1 They Both Act Strangely About Big Life Events

Perhaps the biggest thing to happen to Monica is when she and Chandler decide to truly commit to one another and move in together. It’s honestly weird how Monica and Rachel act about this choice.

While of course Rachel doesn’t want anything to change between them, she’s realistic and positive about it. Instead of being relieved that Rachel is good about it, Monica gets a little mad because she would have preferred for Rachel to be upset about it. They both act really immaturely in this scene, and if they were real friends, they would have had an open and honest conversation in the first place.
