Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a standalone title, not an expansion, despite comments to the contrary made by a Sony VP.

After months of waiting, Sony finally caved and revealed a boatload of information about the PlayStation 5 this week, showcasing what the console looks like alongside a bunch of the titles that will be coming to the platform at launch and into 2021. Those titles include Resident Evil: Village, Oddworld: Soulstorm, Gran Turismo 7, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

However, one of the games to pique viewers’ attention most came right at the start of the hour-plus-long event: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The reveal of a new Spidey game would have been high on many people’s wishlist, but also pretty low down when taking into account realistic expectations. That’s why we were taken aback even more when the release date was revealed to be Holiday 2020.

After the dust had settled, many were left wondering whether or not Miles Morales is actually a true sequel to the popular PlayStation exclusive – especially considering the quick two-year turnaround for such a significant project. Sony VP Simon Rutter told The Telegraph that the game is not a sequel, but an expansion on the original PS4 game. However, further reports suggest that not to be the case.

According to a report via Bloomberg, which has now been confirmed by Insomniac, claims that Miles Morales is neither a sequel nor an expansion. It is a standalone game similar to that of Uncharted Lost Legacy. So while there will be elements of the first game (Morales is a pretty major character after all), the game’s story will likely go off on its own tangent rather than build on the ending to Marvel’s Spider-Man.

As for whether Miles Morales will also be released on PS4, that information is still unknown. Hopefully, this is the last twist in the tale of the game’s identity. Watching the trailer back, it actually seems pretty clear that it will be a standalone title based in the first game’s universe. Either way, it seems like this title will act as the perfect buffer while Insomniac continues to work on the full sequel.
