An Invasion main-character death fixes a glaring plot hole established in an earlier episode of the Apple TV+ original. Invasion tells the story of an extraterrestrial takeover of Earth as seen by ordinary people around the world, as well as honing in on the social and psychological issues that accompany the alien threat. While Invasion has been hindered critically to date by a glacially paced plot, the Apple TV+ original has never been afraid to realistically and unceremoniously bump off its main characters – as evidenced by Sheriff Tyson’s (Sam Neill) death at the end of the season premiere “Last Day.” However, more than adding shock value, these deaths can also answer crucial plot points, as evidenced by Invasion episode 9

Invasion episode 9, “Full of Stars,” converges on several key plotlines as humanity fights back against the aliens, with one such narrative following the Malik family. As they are chased through the woods by a guerilla force seeking the alien claw in their possession, Ahmed (Firas Nassar) orders his family to escape, with the Malik patriarch staying behind to cover their retreat. While Ahmed’s cowardice gets the better of him as he initially seeks refuge with a U.S. soldier, he is redeemed once he realizes the soldier is a traitor and screams to alert Aneesha (Golshifteh Farahani) before being shot to death.

While the closure of Ahmed’s story arc allows his character redemption, his death also fixes a glaring Invasion plot hole first introduced in the episode “Home Invasion.” The fact that Ahmed had been skewered by an alien in “Home Invasion” and recovered with no consequences went against the otherwise grinding realism of the Invasion series to date. Other characters attacked by aliens in Invasion either died instantly or were infected with the alien’s spores, meaning his convenient survival reeked of thinly veiled plot armor. Ahmed’s unceremonious and very realistic death fixes this issue, with the character himself acknowledging his miraculous recovery earlier in the series.

Invasion audiences were absolutely right to take issue with Ahmed’s instantaneous recovery earlier in the season after the Malik patriarch walks away unscathed from an encounter that would have killed any other character in the series. Yet Ahmed’s admissions in Apple TV+ Invasion episodes 8, “Contact”, and 9, “Full of Stars” go to lengths to fix this narrative blip, with Ahmed himself stating he feels weak from the assault and that he would have died without his wife’s immediate aid. While not exactly a concrete explanation for his miraculous healing earlier in the series, “Full of Stars” does at least confirm the physical toll the assault took on Ahmed as he tires while running through the forest – forcing him to let his family go.

However, Invasion’s greatest plot hole fix in “Full of Stars” is exactly how Ahmed dies. The head of the Malik household had previously survived a series of situations bordering on the ludicrous, robbing Simon Kinberg’s Invasion of the realism (even within an alien invasion) that the show prides itself upon. Invasion episode 9 emphatically fixes this issue, with Ahmed killed in a decidedly human way as he takes a bullet from a scared and volatile man with a gun. Ahmed’s death may have afforded his character a modicum of redemption from his heinous acts in earlier episodes, but his passing was a necessary evil for Invasion to return to the grounded tone that has formed the bedrock of its season 1 narrative.
