Invincible’s best Easter egg comes with the introduction of the high school principal voiced by Reginald VelJohnson. The animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic series is opening up the story to a brand new audience. While the comics ended a few years ago after 144 issues, the new series on Amazon Prime Video is updating and retelling the story in a new format. Invincible has made several changes to the comics, but Kirkman has not shied away from building the massive universe that encompasses the story.

As readers of the comic series know, Kirkman loves to include Easter eggs or seemingly random moments or characters that are paid off down the road. These details can come in all parts of Mark Grayson’s life. Invincible so far is focusing on Mark’s early months as a superhero and struggling to balance his new hero lifestyle with his regular life. This includes finding time to hang out with friends, date Amber Bennett, and finish his schoolwork before graduation. It wasn’t until Invincible episode 5 that Mark’s high school principal entered the story, and with that came the show’s best reference yet.

The introduction of the principal meant the debut of Reginald VelJohnson in Invincible. He confronts Mark about how often he’s been missing school and his classes. This piece of casting is an Easter egg itself due to the name of the high school that Winslow oversees. The show stayed true to the comics in this instance and named it Reginald VelJohnson High School. His name is B.N. Winslow, which is a reference to Reginald VelJohnson’s role in Family Matters. All in all, casting Reginald VelJohnson as the principal is a brilliant payoff.

Reginald VelJohnson is best known for one of two roles from the late 1980s and early 1990s. He appeared in Die Hard opposite Bruce Willis, where he played the cop who aids John McClane named Al Powell. VelJohnson returned to the role for Die Hard 2 as well. His biggest break came in 1989 when he began playing Carl Winslow in Family Matters. The sitcom allowed VelJohnson to be the star of one of the biggest shows in America for nine years. His voice was recently heard in 3Below: Tales of Arcadia, and he also appeared in an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

This shouldn’t be the last time Reginald VelJohnson appears in Invincible. Even if he’s not responsible for inspiring Invincible’s name in the show, the principal character leaves Reginald VelJohnson High School after Mark graduates in the comics. He takes a position at Upstate University instead, which is the same college that Mark decides to attend. Kirkman could always change this for the purposes of the show, but that won’t change Invincible giving fans Reginald VelJohnson as the voice of Reginald VelJohnson High School’s principal.
