Apple’s iPhone 12 mini is somewhat self-explanatory in that it’s a smaller version of the iPhone 12 in several ways, including price. Essentially, the iPhone 12 mini is a more pocket – and wallet – friendly alternative to the full-sized iPhone 12. Of course, there are a few minor differences in features, too.

The iPhone 12 mini supports up to 15 hours of video playback while the iPhone 12 can handle up to 17 hours of playback. Outside of that though, these are two different-sized versions of the same phone. That decrease in playback, combined with a smaller overall display, correlates to a more affordable cost for the iPhone 12 mini.

The new iPhone 12 mini has a starting price of $699 regardless of which carrier it is purchased with. Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint all have the phone available for pre-order at the same price. When purchased without a carrier, however, the price of the iPhone 12 mini increases to $729. Storage capacity can also impact the price. The 64GB version of the iPhone 12 mini costs $699 (with a carrier) while the 128GB version retails for $749 and the 256GB edition costs $849. Again, $30 more is added to those additional storage prices, if purchasing the iPhone 12 mini as an unlocked phone.

Is The iPhone 12 mini Worth It?

Besides the 5.4-inch display (versus 6.1 inches on the standard iPhone 12) and the slightly shorter video playback capability, the iPhone 12 mini really is a spitting image of the iPhone 12. Both phones feature 5G support and are capable of shooting Dolby Vision HDR video up to 30 fps. Both also contain the A14 Bionic chip, which Apple says is the fastest chip in a smartphone, and each of these iPhones are water-resistant, up to a depth of six meters for as long as 30 minutes.

When compared to the iPhone 12 Pro, however, there are some more significant discrepancies. The iPhone 12 Pro can record up to 60 fps, has a LiDAR scanner, and surgical-grade stainless steel materials, compared to the iPhone 12 mini’s Aerospace-grade aluminum. Both phones are compatible with MagSafe accessories and wireless chargers, and the iPhone 12 Pro shares the same water resistance rating. However, the iPhone 12 Pro’s camera features 2x optical zoom and up to 6x digital zoom, which are specs the iPhone 12 mini just can’t match.

Then again, the iPhone 12 Pro does start at $1,000, which justifies the better features. If screen size and video playback are not deal-breakers, then it would make plenty of sense to opt for the iPhone 12 mini. After all, it mirrors most of the best aspects of the iPhone 12, all while saving money. For the majority of potential iPhone buyers, that makes the iPhone 12 mini more than worth it.
