Critical Role and HarmonQuest are both hugely popular web series centered around a game of D&D, but they are two very different shows. The last season of HarmonQuest aired back in 2019, so fans who are looking for more D&D content might turn to a long-running show like Critical Role to scratch that itch. But is Critical Role a good show for HarmonQuest fans?
HarmonQuest is an animated web series created by Dan Harmon (who also created Community and Rick & Morty) and Spencer Crittenden, starring regular players Erin McGathy and Jeff B. Davis. Each episode features a special celebrity guest, with past appearances by Nathan Fillion, Patton Oswalt, and Kumail Nanjiani to name a few. Each episode is only 25 minutes long, and there are 30 episodes total. Though the show is based around a game of D&D, the focus is primarily on comedy and entertainment.
Critical Role is a web series in which a group of professional voice actors play a D&D campaign led by DM Matt Mercer. Critical Role features seven regular players along with occasional guest players such as Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, and Chris Hardwick. The show is split into campaigns, with campaign one lasting 115 episodes and campaign two currently at 120 episodes and still ongoing. Each episode is about the length of an average D&D session, ranging from three to six hours.
Critical Role & Harmonquest’s D&D Differences Explained
HarmonQuest is an accessible show that introduces the basic premise of a D&D campaign without any of the dice rolling or rules-lawyering. The tone of HarmonQuest is quite silly, the episodes are very short, and the adventure is a linear story, which makes it an enjoyable show even if someone hasn’t played D&D before. HarmonQuest’s campaign is played in front of a live audience, so DM Spencer Crittenden is clearly focused more on entertaining the crowd than accurately depicting a real D&D game.
Critical Role follows a more serious game of D&D that gives viewers a more accurate representation of what a real D&D session is like. Critical Role fans are able to get more invested in the characters and players because they spend so much time with them – literally hundreds of hours! Matt Mercer is a very skilled DM who crafts intriguing stories that allow for much more player choice than the HarmonQuest campaign. However, the three-to-six-hour runtime of each episode is intimidating to new viewers, especially with over two hundred episodes to catch up on.
Overall, HarmonQuest fans who are more interested in the comedy and short-story format may not enjoy Critical Role’s lengthy episodes and serious gameplay. However, D&D veterans, or those who are interested in seeing how a real D&D game is played, may find that HarmonQuest is a great jumping-off point into a more hardcore show like Critical Role.
Though they’re both centered around Dungeons & Dragons, Critical Role and HarmonQuest are two very different shows. There is a lot of overlap between the two fanbases though, and HarmonQuest does a great job of introducing D&D to new fans who can then turn to Critical Role to learn more about the game.
