In 1992, Kirby, the round pink power-sucking superstar appeared in his first Nintendo game. The character entered the hearts of even more fans when he premiered in Super Smash Brothers back in 1999. In his 28-year history, there’s been a lot written and revealed about Kirby. But he is far from the only Nintendo character with a vast and (sometimes) confusing history.

Like any good character, Nintendo is full of interesting facts and backstories. Here are just a few of the most interesting things that might have stayed under the radar when it comes to the most popular Nintendo characters.

10 Kirby

Kirby can borrow powers from characters around him, so he is kind of evil that way, consuming his enemies. But, what about his gender? Basically, Kirby is a boy. In the original English manual for Kirby’s Dream Land (from 1992) Kirby is described as such.

Players only seem to get confused because, generally, Kirby is pink. But color doesn’t have a gender, so this has just been an uneducated assumption. Kirby, described by Nintendo, is a boy.

9 Mario

The original Italian plumber did not have the name, Mario. Perhaps Nintendo’s most well-known character, Mario was initially known as “Jumpman”.

He premiered in the original Donkey Kong video game and earned this original name because he was literally one of the first characters who was ever able to jump upward in a video game. Now jumping is one of the most basic moves, but back in the day, it was original and Mario was the king.

8 Luigi

Luigi, Mario’s taller though less-beloved brother looks like Mario on purpose. It wasn’t so much a design decision as a design necessity.

Early video games had very limited memory available and, thus, Luigi’s design had to stem from characters that already existed in the games he was joining. Thus, he got part of Mario’s body and received his green coloring from the Koopas in the game.

7 Bowser

Bowser may look a lot like a dragon turtle, but that wasn’t how he was originally envisioned. In fact, Mario’s nemesis was supposed to look much more like an ox than a turtle.

With the turtle-like Koopas already in the games, it made a lot more sense for Bowser to connect to the game and the story more in a visual way. The ox design never really came to fruition and so Bowser was born.

6 Peach And Daisy

Peach and Daisy, two of the few female characters in the Nintendo universe, often seem to be best friends, and perhaps they are. But Peach and Daisy are also more than that.

In the Prima Guide for Mario Kart on the Wii, it is confirmed that Peach and Daisy may be friends, but they are also cousins. Like any good dynasty, they seem to have kept their royal titles and kingdoms in the family.

Link, the famed fighter from the Legends of Zelda Nintendo games, wears green and wields both a sword and bow. Why green for Link? It wasn’t due to memory constraints (as it was with Luigi) but rather due to the inspiration for the character.

Link was designed to resemble the famous literary youth, Peter Pan. Another small fact that may have gone unnoticed when focusing on the gameplay, Link just happens to be left-handed.

4 Yoshi

Most fans know Yoshi as the green dinosaur sidekick of the famed Mario. However, Yoshi is not only the name of the character but this species of dinosaur, as well.

There are quite a few color variations of Yoshi and not just in Super Smash Brothers. These include red, yellow, blue, pink, blue, purple, brown, black, white, orange, and magenta. It would be nice to see a few more of these variations in gameplay, just for fun.

3 Toad

Toad, the little mushroom-headed guide in Mario Kart, premiered in 1985 in Super Mario Brothers. He’s one of a few named characters with a mushroom look to them, including Toadette, his female counterpart in many of the games.

Like Yoshi, Toad is not only his name but the name of his species of mushroom men that can be seen across the Mario titles. And that mushroom is his head, it’s not a hat.

2 Birdo

Birdo first appeared in 1988 in Super Mario Brothers 2. Birdo is pink, but was described then as a character who thinks of herself as a girl, despite actually being a pink-colored boy.

This means that Birdo is often considered the first-ever transgender character in video games. In Japanese, Birdo also has a more traditional name and is often called Catherine. Her first appearance in Super Mario Brothers 2 had her play as an antagonist in the game.

1 Donkey Kong

Donkey Kong was never the real antagonist in the game that bears his name. In fact, Donkey Kong is a captive of the abusive Mario/Jumpman in his series of games.

The first Donkey Kong game hit shelves in 1981. Since then, Mario has always been trying to keep Kong captive. In Donkey Kong Jr., Mario is actually depicted as keeping Donkey Kong in a cage.
