Is The Joker In Suicide Squad Kill The Justice League

Rocksteady’s next DC superhero game will focus on the anti-heroes of the DC universe in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The announcement trailer hints that Task Force X will be taking on a Justice League that is being mind-controlled by super-villain Braniac. There’s a strong chance that other DC villains will make an appearance in the game (unless they all decided to keep their heads down during the invasion), but what about the Joker, the recurring villain of Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham series?

[Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Batman: Arkham Games]

After a successful trilogy of Batman games that concluded with Batman: Arkham Knight, Rocksteady is shifting focus with Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Unlike Rocksteady’s Batman games, which were third-person action games, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be a shooter, with optional four-player co-op available in the story campaign. Players will be able to play as Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, or Captain Boomerang and can freely switch between the characters at any time. Rocksteady has confirmed that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be a continuation of what they are referring to as the “Arkhamverse.”

Assuming that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League takes place after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight, it seems unlikely that the Joker will make an appearance in the new game. Although the Joker appeared in all three Arkham games, he actually died at the end of the second game, Batman: Arkham City. The Joker’s body was eventually cremated, but he wasn’t gone completely from the series. A combination of Scarecrow’s Fear Toxin gas and an injection of the Joker’s blood left Batman hallucinating the Joker’s appearance throughout Batman: Arkham Knight, but by the end of the third game, Batman had found a way to control and defeat the hallucinations and regain control of his mind.

How the Joker Could Still Appear in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Although the Joker is very definitively dead at the end of the Arkham trilogy, never say never when it comes to comic book storylines. It seems highly unlikely that the “real” Joker will be in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, but there are ways he could still have a role in the game. At the simplest level, he could appear in flashbacks about Harley Quinn’s earlier life. Or he could be cloned by a villain or appear via illusions or hallucinations. There’s any number of ways Brainiac or another villain could resurrect the Crown Prince of Crime for a cameo.

It’s possible Rocksteady will want to leave the Joker behind as they establish a new chapter in the Arkhamverse, but the option is always there to try and find a way to incorporate the fan-favorite villain once again. Very few details are known about the actual game of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, in part because the release date isn’t until 2022. Until then, the most fans can do is speculate about how the Arkhamverse will continue to grow when this next game is released in a few years.
