Is Thor Still Worthy of Mjolnir When Hes Under Mind Control

As a founding Avenger and one of Marvel’s most powerful warriors, Thor has risen to many challenges wielding his hammer, Mjolnir. Unfortunately, he wasn’t always the celebrated hero fans are familiar with today. Arrogant and impetuous in his youth, Thor was sent to Earth and stripped of his abilities by his father, Odin, in order to learn a lesson in humility. In doing so, the All-Father cast an enchantment on the God of Thunder’s hammer, so that only someone worthy could lift it. In time, Thor changed his behavior and regained his powers, but with Odin’s enchantment still active, Thor must remain vigilant to avoid falling back into his unworthy ways. Within the Marvel Universe, however, there are many outside forces, like telepathy and sorcery, that can change how people behave. With such factors in place, the question remains: can mind-control make Thor unworthy of lifting Mjolnir?

Getting into Thor’s head is not as easy as it might seem. While not fully immune to psychics, Thor has managed to fight off telepathic attacks from a variety of foes, and is generally able to shake off the effects of mind-control quicker than the average person. This defense mechanism has helped him numerous times but isn’t foolproof. Nevertheless, taking over Thor’s mind is a serious challenge, and those who’ve actually accomplished the task possess some impressive skills.

Despite Thor’s resistance to telepathy, he’s had his mind manipulated several times throughout his extensive history. One of the earliest examples occurred in 1963’s Journey into Mystery #93 by Stan Lee, Robert Bernstein, Jack Kirby, Dick Ayers, and Ray Holloway, wherein the God of Thunder is hypnotized by the Radioactive Man, who commands Thor to toss away Mjolnir, as the hammer served as his source of power at the time. The Enchantress also makes this list, using her magical abilities to pit Thor against his teammates in Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Chic Stone, and Art Simek’s Avengers #7 in 1964. While not technically considered mind-control, 2012’s Uncanny Avengers #3, by Rick Remender, John Cassaday, Laura Martin, and Chris Eliopoulos, sees Red Skull convince Thor to fight for his evil cause by utilizing the persuasive powers of Honest John, the Living Propaganda, having the Asgardian brutalize Wolverine in the process. Even the MCU has shown that Thor’s mind isn’t impenetrable, with Scarlet Witch using a mind attack against him and his teammates in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

With plenty of instances to look back on, it becomes clear that outside influence doesn’t seem to have any impact on Thor’s worthiness. In each of the comics mentioned, Thor is still able to lift Mjolnir while being swayed by his enemies, even using the hammer for unsavory acts like fighting his allies. Radioactive Man does technically make Thor drop the weapon through hypnosis, but this is only because he gives a direct order, not because Thor becomes any less worthy while under another’s control. There is no explanation readily available, but one potential reason for this could be the wording of Mjolnir’s enchantment. The sentence inscribed on the hammer states, “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of… Thor.” This suggests that, since Thor has already proven himself worthy, it doesn’t matter if he’s actually in control of himself as long as he’s the one physically holding the hammer, which is the case in each of the mentioned scenarios.

Even if this isn’t the exact reasoning, the fact that the God of Thunder is still worthy while being controlled by others is pretty terrifying considering how much destruction he can cause with Mjolnir. Hopefully, Thor builds up his mental defenses so this doesn’t happen anytime soon.
